Ship of Fools was released in October 2018 before the midterm elections and is a New York Times #1 best seller.[2] Synopsis{{Expand section|date=March 2019}}Introduction: Our Ship of FoolsCarlson introduces his thesis by applying the allegory given in Plato's Republic, in which the US ship of state has been commandeered by an incompetent crew (the current political and economic elite ruling class) who are oblivious to the needs of, and contemptuous of the desires of the passengers (the citizens) and intolerant of criticism. Contrary to what might be expected of a conservative political commentator, Carlson does not restrict his definition of the elite to liberal members of Congress, but includes politicians of both political parties, certain neoconservative pundits, and modern entrepreneurs such as the CEOs of Facebook and Amazon, who he blames for decimating the American middle class and thus widening the gap between rich and poor, and generally betraying the liberal values they profess.[3] While Carlson considers the Presidential election of Donald Trump to be an historical aberration, he does not count Trump among the "ship of fools" and explains his election as the passengers' desperate attempt to send a message to the mutineers.
