HistoryIn 1942 the Tunisian Government legalised prostitutes as "fonctionnaires" (civil servants). They were required to register and strictly regulated.[2][3] One of the regulations was that they could only operate from designated areas. Sidi Abdallah Guech was the area designated in Tunis. The nature is this area has continued until current times.[2] Jasmine RevolutionFollowing the 2011 Jasmine Revolution, the Islamist government turned a blind eye to fundamentalist action against the red light districts[2]. Many were burnt down, in other the prostitutes were turned out and the buildings wrecked.[3] On 18th February 2011 a large group of fundamentalists approached the entrance of Sidi Abdallah Guech loudly demanding moral cleanliness and armed with sticks and torches. Locals barricaded the entrance to the alleys[12] until police and military arrived. Police fired warning shots into the air to disperse the rioters.[3] Since then the street sign has been removed[4] and a notice put up 'Closed on Fridays and during Ramadan' to try and appease the fundamentalists.[3] References1. ^{{cite web | url = http://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2010/10/24/what-we-dont-know-about-sex-in-the-middle-east/ideas/up-for-discussion/ | title = What We Don’t Know about Sex in the Middle East | last = | first = | date = | website = | publisher = Zocalo | access-date = April 16, 2017 | quote = }} 2. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web | url = https://en.qantara.de/content/prostitution-in-tunisia-the-big-reveal | title = The Big Reveal | last = Omlin | first = Christina | date = | website = | publisher = Qantara | access-date = April 16, 2017 | quote = }} 3. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web | url = http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/salafist-intimidation-campaign-threatens-young-democracy-in-tunisia-a-870680.html | title = The Battle for the Future of Tunisia | last = | first = | date = 2012-12-05 | website = | publisher = Spiegel | access-date = 2017-04-23 | quote = }} 4. ^1 {{cite web | url = https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=fr&sp=nmt4&tl=en&u=http://www.webdo.tn/2011/03/10/abdallah-gueche-rebaptisee/&usg=ALkJrhixJdbAGMHA27dpX631RYfbbxaPWw | title = Abdallah Gueche renamed? | last = | first = | date = March 10, 2011 | website = | publisher = Webdo | access-date = April 23, 2017 | quote = }} Further reading
