It was known from a single, fragmentary, mandible found in the 1990s. However, most of the specimen has been lost, leaving only the right ramus and an in-situ photograph of the mandible. The mandible was originally thought a gompothere closely related to Sinomastodon, but an analysis revealed it to actually be a mammutid that was a sister group to the well-known Mastodon. It can be distinguished from the mastodon by its lack of lower tusks.[1] References1. ^{{Cite journal|last=Mothé|first=Dimila|last2=Avilla|first2=Leonardo S.|last3=Zhao|first3=Desi|last4=Xie|first4=Guangpu|last5=Sun|first5=Boyang|last6=Mothé|first6=Dimila|last7=Avilla|first7=Leonardo S.|last8=Zhao|first8=Desi|last9=Xie|first9=Guangpu|title=A new Mammutidae (Proboscidea, Mammalia) from the Late Miocene of Gansu Province, China|url=http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S0001-37652016000100065&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en|journal=Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências|volume=88|issue=1|pages=65–74|doi=10.1590/0001-3765201520150261|issn=0001-3765}} {{Proboscidea Genera}}{{Taxonbar|from=Q24257051}}{{paleo-mammal-stub}} 4 : Fossil taxa described in 2016|Mastodons|Fossils of China|Miocene mammals of Asia |
