Sefora Sonia "Sisi" Ntombela is a South African politician who currently serves as the 6th Premier of the Free State. She is also serving as a Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature. She is Deputy President of the African National Congress Women’s League. She previously served as the Free State Member of the Executive Council for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements and Free State Member of the Executive Council for Social Development.

Early life and career

Born Sonia Sefora Ntombela in the small farming town of Tweeling in the Free State. She was given the nickname of "Sisi" at a young age. She is one of six children. She attended the Tweeling Combine School and matriculated from Kganyeng Secondary School. She then went on to study at Bonamelo Training College and completed her teaching course. She then returned to the Tweeling Combine School as a teacher.

Due to Apartheid and the tense political situation at the time, she secretly taught her pupils about Nelson Mandela, who was a political prisoner. One of the pupils was the school principal's child and the child reported Ntombela for her secret lessons. Due to the matter, she left the teaching profession.

Political career

Ntombela was then employed by the Department of Health and worked as family planning and youth adviser. Ntombela was recruited to politics and the African National Congress by Pulane Ngatane, while she was still a student at the Bonamelo Training College. She and a few fellow students attempted to go to the funeral of Steve Biko but were caught and punished by their parents.

She later became branch chairperson of African National Congress Women's League in Tweeling and was subsequently appointed the regional chairperson. She describes her husband as being very influential as he organised many political events in the town of Tweeling. She appointed mayor of the Tweeling municipality after the 1994 elections and later. She was elected Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature in 1999 and remained in the legislature until 2001 when she was appointed a member of the National Assembly. She returned to the legislature as chairperson of the portfolio committee for Social Development and Health.

In 2009, newly-elected Free State Premier Ace Magashule announced that Ntombela would take up the position of MEC for Social Development. She remained in the position until Magashule reshuffled the Executive Council in 2016 and appointed Ntombela to the position of MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements.

In 2015, Ntombela was elected the Deputy President of the African National Congress Women’s League.[1]

In March 2018, she was appointed Premier of the Free State, succeeding Ace Magashule.[2][3]
