S. Jack Hu ({{zh|s=胡仕新|p=Hú Shì Xīn}}) is the J. Reid and Polly Anderson Professor of Manufacturing, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he is also the Vice President for Research^[1]. He teaches courses and conducts research in manufacturing systems, assembly modeling, and statistical quality control. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and a fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), and a member of the National Academy of Engineering^[2].

Early life and education

Dr. Hu was born in Changde, Hunan province, China. He obtained his B.S. degree from Tianjin University, China, in 1983. After that, he came to University of Michigan and did his graduate-level study in mechanical engineering working with Professor Shien-Ming (Sam) Wu,^[3] a specialist in modern manufacturing system. Dr. Hu earned his Ph.D. in 1990 with a dissertation "Impact of 100% measurement data on statistical process control (SPC) in automobile body assembly"^[4].

Career

After finishing his PhD, Dr. Hu stayed at Michigan as an eight-month Postdoctoral Research Fellow from January 1991 to August 1991, and then as an Assistant Research Scientist from September 1991 to August 1995. During this period, Hu led the "ATP 2mm Project"^[5]^[6].
