Skyward is a 2018 young adult science fiction novel written by American author Brandon Sanderson. It is the first of a to-be quartet.

Plot summary

Part One

Spensa is a 17-year-old girl who is part of a group of shipwrecked humans living on a ruined world called Detritus, under constant attack from mysterious aliens called the Krell. Spensa dreams of following the footsteps of her deceased father, a fighter pilot at the Defiant Defense Force (DDF), however is barred from any chances of becoming one due to the fact that her father abandoned his flight crew in the infamous Battle of Alta which ended in his own crewmates taking him down.

In order to get accepted into the flight academy, she and her peers are required to take an exam to prove their worth. Spensa, who has been preparing for her entire life, has high hopes to pass, along with her lifelong companion Rodge. However, on the day of the testing, the leader of the pilot Admiral Ironsides purposefully forces her to fail the exam. Angry at her defeat, she surreptitiously retakes it after everyone has left. A supposed custodian catches her taking it and looks over her exam, finding that she got a near-perfect score. The custodian reveals himself to Spensa as her father's former copilot Cobb, who is now teaching at the flight academy. He gives her the opportunity to come train under him.

Part Two

At the academy, Spensa is introduced to her fellow cadet crew who, at Spensa's recommendation, names themselves the Skyward Flight. After getting started with flying in a virtual reality simulator, they are suddenly interrupted by an alert by the DDF which calls for all pilots to help fight off an unexpected swarm of Krell. This practical demonstration of pilot fighting calls for Rodge, who also got accepted, to quit the academy and be the first of Skyward Flight to leave.

Spensa is not allowed to stay the quarters in the academy or eat meals there, so she occupies a nearby cave, which is home to an advanced crashed ship with an artificial intelligence computer. Spensa, with the help of a cautious Rodge, begin work in repairing the ship.

In the meantime, Spensa and her cadet flight crew continue to learn and practice new techniques under the guidance of Cobb. Spensa begins to grow a liking torwards her classmates and starts to bond with them.

After some time, Rodge and Spensa are able to power the ship on. The ship introduces itself as M-Bot and explains that it was left in the cave by its former owner. However, M-Bot has a cleared memory and cannot remember who its previous owner was and how he got there. The only thing he can remember getting told is to lie low and not reveal itself to the public. Spensa contemplates what to do with M-Bot when suddenly she is interrupted by an incoming alert: dozens of Krell ships have entered the atmosphere and all flight crews are once again being ordered to engage.

Spensa catches up with Skyward Flight in the midst of battle. Several of her teammates pick up tail Krell ships intent on destroying them, and Spensa evades hers by a sharp maneuever. Nevertheless, she is unable to save her classmates Morningtide and Bim, who are killed by an onslaught of Krell ships. This turn of events leaves the Skyward Flight down two more members.

Part Three

After being expelled from fighter pilot school for ejecting during a battle, Spensa ultimately saves the colony from disaster using M-bot. With the help of M-bot, she also finds answers as to who the mysterious aliens are, why they are attacking, what happened to her father, and how her special psychic gift can be used to travel instantaneously.

At the end of the novel, Spensa has become a hero, but the humans are still trapped under attack on the planet.
