}}Catherine Slater (born September 17, 1996), known professionally as Slayyyter, is an American pop singer and songwriter, currently based in St. Louis. She started her career independently through SoundCloud.[2] She was originally named Slater, before renaming herself to Slayyyter. Her single release "Mine" reached #38 on the iTunes pop chart.[3]

Early life and career

Early life

Slayyyter is from a small suburb Kirkwood, which is near St. Louis, where she has "kind of lived [her] whole life". She went to private grade schools, and later continued her education in public school, where she was "offered great music classes for the first time."[4]

2017–2018: Early approaches to music and first single releases

Slayyyter spent a year in college. This time was an "expensive experiment" in which she started her career as a musician, writing "'80s lo-fi pop" that she herself produced and edited, but never published. She later dropped out and committed fully to her music career.[5]

In spite of being based in St. Louis, Slayyyter's most frequent collaborator, Ayesha Erotica, is from Los Angeles.[5] The artists met through Twitter, which is where Slayyyter first developed a following: "I've been on Twitter for a really long time, building a little following".[5] The artist credits Stan Twitter for making her get to know Ayesha. "I feel like a lot of my fans are just Charli XCX fan accounts. It was a Charli account who told me about Ayesha and that kind of started everything", Slayyyter stated on an interview for The Fader.[5]

Apart from "BFF", the singles "Alone" and "All I Want For Xxxmas" also sprung from the collaboration between the two artists. The rest of Slayyyter's 2018 single releases included "Candy", "Platform Shoes" and "Hello Kitty".

2019: Debut tour, "Mine" and first mainstream recognition

After a 14-second snippet of the song gathered attention on Twitter with over 200,000 views,[5] "Mine" was released on Valentine's Day[6][7] and in less than 24 hours reached #38 in the iTunes pop chart in the United States.[3] On February 11, Slayyyter announced her debut US tour with the support of Robokid and Boy Sim, titled The Mini Tour.[8]

In the near future, Slayyyter plans on releasing her debut mixtape and moving to Los Angeles.[9]

Artistry

Music style

Her music style has been likened to Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton,[10] as well as sounding somewhat "like Charli XCX on whippets".[11] Her first 2018 release, "BFF", featured Ayesha Erotica, a producer and frequent collaborator[12] from Las Vegas who has worked previously with people such as Joanne Prada. She has also worked with Boy Sim, being a featured artist on the song Faded from his debut album.

Influences

The artists cites Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, Lady Gaga, and Justin Timberlake as some of the artists who she listened to the most growing up and who ultimately influenced her style.[12]

Visual style

Slayyyter's visual style has been defined as "distinct MySpace-era"[13]. She frequently collaborates with British-based artist Glitchmood for single artworks,[11] who has also worked with Cupcakke and designed artist-approved fan artworks for Charli XCX and Kim Petras.
