HistoryThe company was founded in 2009 by Jack Welde[1] and Andrey Akselrod.[1] In 2012 the company received its first funding beyond bootstrapping with an angel investment of $1.5 million.[3] Its Series A funding was $4 million, and its Series B was $10 million.[2] In its Series C funding it received an additional $24 million,[3] and in its Series D it raised an additional $25 million.[4] The company’s valuation upon its Series D was $250 million.[1] The company is headquartered in New York City.[5] In 2016 Smartling acquired VerbalizeIt, a firm producing translations for companies in the process of expanding internationally. The founders of the company and its staff joined Smartling as a part of the acquisition.[6] Smartling also acquired Jargon in 2016, a company involved in the localization of mobile apps.[5] TranslationsSmartling translates digital content into foreign languages through automated processes,[7] as new content on client sites is flagged for translation and sent to translators for rewriting.[8] When changes to the original language are detected, all foreign language versions of the website or app are automatically flagged for translation within the platform.[2] The changes are then delivered to front end user through the back end of a client’s system.[9][10] In addition to its translation platform, the company works with a few thousand translators to provide translation services, in addition to its in-house staff of about 160. The process involves translation, followed by a translation review, legal review, and editing.[1] The company does text translations, in addition to audio and video translations.[11] Its enterprise platform and translation services are cloud-based.[12] In addition to translation services, Smartling also developed its "Mobile Localization Solution" and "Mobile Delivery Network" platforms for routine updating of text variances on updated app versions.[13] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/briansolomon/2014/12/01/translate-your-app-how-smartling-goes-global-with-apple-tesla-gopro-and-more/#65d697055f61|title=Translate Your App: How Smartling Goes Global With Apple, Tesla, GoPro And More|first=Brian|last=Solomon|publisher=Forbes}} 2. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://venturebeat.com/2011/07/27/smarling-funding-translation/|title=Smartling makes translation affordable with $10M in funding |publisher=VentureBeat|website=venturebeat.com}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://therealdeal.com/2014/05/22/two-new-york-start-ups-receive-venture-capital-for-new-offices/|title=Two New York start-ups receive venture capital for new offices|date=22 May 2014|publisher=The Real Deal}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://blogs.wsj.com/venturecapital/2014/05/21/smartling-raises-25m-to-help-companies-translate-anything-digital/|title=Smartling Raises $25M to Help Companies Translate Anything Digital|first=Lora|last=Kolodny|date=21 May 2014|publisher=Wall Street Journal}} 5. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://www.tnooz.com/article/verbalizeit-smartling/|title=VerbalizeIt is acquired by Smartling, in a translation mash-up |publisher=TNooz}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.alleywatch.com/2016/05/nyc-startup-just-acquired-destroy-barrier/|title=This NYC Startup Was Just Acquired to Destroy This Barrier|date=24 May 2016|publisher=Alley Watch}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.businessinsider.com/after-selling-his-first-startup-to-apple-and-then-flying-jets-this-guy-has-an-awesome-new-startup-2012-7|title=After Selling His First Startup To Apple And Then Flying Jets, This Guy Has An Awesome New Company|publisher=Business Insider}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/briansolomon/2014/12/01/translate-your-app-how-smartling-goes-global-with-apple-tesla-gopro-and-more/#66e243895f61|title=Translate Your App: How Smartling Goes Global With Apple, Tesla, GoPro And More|first=Brian|last=Solomon|publisher=Forbes}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=https://techcrunch.com/2016/04/06/smartling-acquires-jargon-to-help-mobile-developers-ready-their-apps-for-international-markets/|title=Smartling acquires Jargon to help mobile developers ready their apps for international markets|first=Lora|last=Kolodny|publisher=Tech Crunch}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2017-05-01/language|title=Finding a voice|publisher=The Economist}} 11. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.bizjournals.com/newyork/news/2016/05/19/shark-tank-alumnus-verbalizeit-sells-to-fellow-n-y.html|publisher=New York Business Journal|title=Shark Tank Alumnus VerbalizeIt Sells to Fellow}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.businesscloudnews.com/2013/10/11/smartling-wins-24m-funding-for-clound-based-translation/|title=Smartling wins $24m funding for cloud-based translation |publisher=Business Cloud News|website=www.businesscloudnews.com}} 13. ^{{cite web|url=https://appdevelopermagazine.com/4910/2017/2/2/mobile-language-localization-now-available-from-smartling/|title=Mobile language localization now available from Smartling|first=Christian|last=Hargrave|publisher=App Developer Magazine}} External links{{url|https://www.smartling.com/}} 4 : Companies based in New York City|Translation companies|Translation software|Companies established in 2009 |
