Sherman's work has been praised for its "deeply personal" expression of human emotion and of the subjects inspired by them.[1] Sherman's skills and reputation as a jeweler have earned her many awards, including a Tiffany Foundation Emerging Artists Award, various fellowships, and a Fulbright Scholarship.[2] LifeEarly lifeSherman was born in 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[3] She majored in painting and jewelry at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia before moving to Germany in 1984. EducationIn 1980, Sherman received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, where she concentrated in jewelry and painting. In 1990, she received her Diplom (a Master of Fine Arts equivalent) from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. At the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, Sherman’s work reflected the school's emphasis on strong design. For instance, Continental Drift is a 3 × 5.7 × 0.5 cm sterling silver, 22-karat gold, acetate, water, glass piece that reflects the fluidity of Earth's constellation.[4] Professional experienceSince 2006, Sherman has worked as faculty for the San Diego State University as an associate professor of art in jewelry and metalwork. She has also taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, and Rhode Island College. WorkSherman's work has been said to express a sense of human character and emotion.[5] For example, the piece Miss Havisham uses Charles Dickens' archetypal character to explore the stereotype of the old maid and society's discomfort with nontraditional women.[6] As Sherman describes, "Miss Havisham, a chagrined, wealthy old woman, was left standing at the alter. The interior of her magnificent house remains as it was decorated to celebrate her wedding day. An atmosphere of bitter disappointment prevails."[7] Always an artist, I was eventually drawn to jewelry by the inherent and socially interconnecting meanings of personal adornment... I choose the subjects, methods and materials of the jeweler which challenge my commitment and amplify the distinctive voice and context of jewelry. Its human scale challenges me to be concise... I consider "wearability" essential to the expressive opportunity found its dual nature, perceived personally in relation to an individual--and socially as an object on public display. So, does the wearer complete the jewelry or does the jewelry complete the wearer?[8] CollectionsSherman's work is in the permanent collections of:[9]
