The sculptor was Grinling Gibbons, and the statue was executed around 1680–1682. The king founded the Royal Hospital in 1682 as a home for retired army veterans. The statue is a Grade I listed structure. HistoryCharles II founded the Royal Hospital in 1682 to care for "those broken by age or war".[1] The inspiration was the Hotel des Invalides, in Paris, founded by his fellow monarch Louis XIV of France.{{sfn|Cherry|Pevsner|2002|p=562}} The commission was given to Christopher Wren[1] and construction continued from 1682 to 1691.{{sfn|Cherry|Pevsner|2002|p=562}} The statue of Charles was commissioned by Tobias Rustat, a member of the king's court[2] and was designed by Grinling Gibbons{{sfn|Cherry|Pevsner|2002|p=565}} in about 1682.[3] Gibbon's fee was £500. The statue originally stood elsewhere and was moved to the Royal Hospital after Charles's death in 1685.[4] Annually, on 29 May, Oak Apple Day, the traditional day for the celebration of the Restoration in 1660, the statue is wreathed with oak leaves.{{sfn|Darke|1991|p=46}} DescriptionThe statue is of brass and was originally gilded in bronze.[3] It has been re-gilded subsequently{{sfn|Cherry|Pevsner|2002|p=565}} to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.[5] It depicts the king in the attire of a Roman general,{{sfn|Cherry|Pevsner|2002|p=565}} is 7.6ft high, and stands on a marble plinth.[2] The statue was designated a Grade I listed structure, the highest grading given to buildings and structures of "exceptional interest", in 1969.[3] Notes1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.chelsea-pensioners.co.uk/history|title=- Royal Hospital Chelsea|publisher=}} 2. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.chelsea-pensioners.co.uk/figure-court|title=Figure Court|date=1 August 2013|publisher=|accessdate=27 January 2018}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1226477 |title=STATUE OF CHARLES II IN CENTRE OF MIDDLE COURTYARD IN MAIN BUILDINGS, ROYAL HOSPITAL, Kensington and Chelsea – 1226477 |publisher=Historic England |date=1969-04-15 |accessdate=2018-01-26}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-london/vol11/pt4/pp12-29|title=The Royal Hospital: Architectural description – British History Online|website=www.british-history.ac.uk}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://exploring-london.com/tag/queen-elizabeth-iis-golden-jubilee/ |title=Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee |publisher=Exploring London |date=2012-07-20 |accessdate=2018-01-26}} Sources
