L. Holmberg in 1881, with the type species Stenoterommata platensis.[1] Holmberg explained that the genus name referred to the fact that the posterior eyes of the species were narrower than any other species in Argentina. The name Stenoterommata is a Latinized form of {{lang|grc|stenoterommatos}}, an adjective derived from Greek, meaning "narrower eyed", and is feminine,[1] as it implicitly modifies {{lang|la|aranea}}, "spider".
