}}Stephen James Morgan (born 17 January 1981)[2] is a British Labour Party politician[3] who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth South since the 2017 general election.[4]

Morgan is from Fratton, a district of Portsmouth; where he attended Priory School and Portsmouth College in the city.[5] He then went on to study politics and sociology at the University of Bristol before gaining a master's degree in politics at Goldsmiths in London.[6]

After graduating he worked at various departments at Portsmouth City Council, before becoming Head of Community Engagement for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.[7] In 2015 he became CEO of Basingstoke Voluntary Action.[8][9] This role allowed him to run for public office and in May 2016 he became the councillor for a central ward in Portsmouth City Council. Later that year he became the Leader of the Portsmouth Labour Group.[10]

On 8 June 2017, a snap general election which was called by British Prime Minister Theresa May was held, where he defeated the incumbent Conservative MP Flick Drummond for the Portsmouth South seat by a majority of 1,554 and a swing of 9.4% to Labour.[11] This makes him the first member of his party to represent the seat since its creation in 1918. In his victory speech Morgan said, "Portsmouth had voted for hope".[12]
