}}Stephen Ikani Ocheni (born 25 June 1959) is a Nigerian, professor of accounting and the current minister of state for labour and employment, he was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari on March 29, 2017; sworn into office on July 26, 2017.[1] He was assigned a portfolio on August 16, 2017 and he resumed on August 18, 2017 until his nomination, Ocheni was the Dean of Faculty of Management Sciences, Kogi State University, Anyigba.[2][3][4]

Family, Marriage and Personal Life

Ocheni was born on 25 June 1959 into the family of Pa Ocheni in Uwowo in Igalamela-Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State and he is happily married with children.[5]

Education

Stephen Ocheni was educated at Secondary Commercial College, Idah, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1979.

Thereafter, he bagged a Higher National Diploma from the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, in 1983. In 1990, he obtained an MBA (Finance) from Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 1990. Ocheni bagged a PhD in Financial Management from the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2004 after successfully undergoing an M.Sc/PhD programme in the institution.

  • Certificate in Internal Auditing with Computer Application from Worthington, West Sussex U.K.
  • Certificate in Project Financing and Sustainability, USA.

Career

Ocheni was a lecturer in Accounting, Taxation, Cost Accounting and Management Accounting at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State, between 1985 and 1993.

He has at various times served as Financial Controller, World Bank Assisted Kogi State Essential Drugs Programme; Director (Office of the Accountant General, Kogi State/ State Programme Accountant, UNDP) and Permanent Secretary in Kogi State, all between 1992 and 2003.[6]

Ocheni was Deputy Director, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development; Director, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation; and Director, Finance and Accounts, Ministry of foreign Affairs all between 2003 and 2013.

He was a professor of Public Sector Accounting and Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences at Kogi State University between 2013 and 2017.

Membership

Stephen Ocheni is a member of the following professional bodies:

  • Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, FCNA;
  • Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, FCTI;
  • Chartered Institute of Local Government and Public Administration, FCPA;
  • Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria, FCE.

Awards

  • Distinguished Service Award by the Institute of Independent Marketing Management of Nigeria.
  • Kogi State Merit Award as The Best Permanent Secretary in Kogi State.
  • Award of Excellence by the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa in recognition of my commendable work and technical support to the Directorate.
  • Distinguished Honours Awards by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council.
  • Award of Fellowship by the Institute of Industrialists and Corporate Administrators.
  • Award for hard work and Financial Prudence by the Nigerian union of Journalists (October 2010).
  • Merit Award by the Rotary Club International.
  • Distinguished Leadership Award by Igalamela Solidarity Forum.
  • Merit Award for distinguished Humanitarian Services by the Old Students Association of Idah Secondary Commercial College, 26 December 2010.
  • Award for Academic Excellence and Hard-work by Igalamela Community Development Association, Abuja.
