In Greek mythology, Sthenelus ({{IPAc-en|ˈ|s|θ|ɛ|n|ə|l|ə|s|,_|ˈ|s|t|ɛ|n|-}}; Ancient Greek: Σθένελος Sthénelos, "strong one" or "forcer", derived from sthenos "strength, might, force") was one of the Achaean Leaders. He was also counted as one of the Epigoni[1][2] and a suitor of Helen[3][4]. FamilySthenelus was the son of Capaneus[5][6] and Evadne[7]. He was the father of Cylarabes and Cometes, lover of Aegialia[8]. MythologySthenelus fought alongside Diomedes and the other Argives in the Trojan War and brought 25 ships to Troy[7]. He was one of the men who hid in the Trojan horse[9]. In the Iliad, Sthenelus boasts that he captured the city of Thebes, while his father, fighting alongside the Seven Against Thebes, died attempting the same thing.[10] He ruled Iphis' half of Argos, along with Diomedes, after both Adrastus and Aegialeus had died.[11]{{s-start}} {{s-reg}}{{succession box| title = King of Argos | years = | before = Iphis | after = Cylarabes }}{{s-end}}{{Characters in the Iliad}} Notes1. ^Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 3.7.2 2. ^Hyginus, Fabulae 71 3. ^Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 3.10.8 4. ^Hyginus, Fabulae 81 5. ^Hyginus, Fabulae 71, 175 & 257 6. ^Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 3.7.2 & 3.10.8 7. ^1 Hyginus, Fabulae 97 8. ^Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca Epitome of Book 4.6.9 9. ^Hyginus, Fabulae 108 10. ^Homer, Iliad 4.403-410 11. ^Tripp, Edward.
