It is currently one of the most modern cathedrals in the country and was inaugurated on December 16, 1979[4] and designed by architect Daniel Ramos Correas and Carlos Enrique Vallhonrat. The Whole Complex of the present Cathedral Church of St. John is located in the same place and orientation occupied, until the earthquake of 1944, the former largest church in the province. The first cathedral was built by the Society of Jesus in 1712. In 1944, an earthquake struck the province of St John. The Cathedral was one of many buildings damaged.
