It closed in 1919.[6] In July 1935, local farmer Victor George Hawkes of Turallin shot and killed his wife, his two children and his father-in-law before shooting and skilling himself. He had started a fire to try to make it appear to be an accident. He had purchased the rifle earlier that day claiming he needed it to shoot wild cats. It was suggested he acted when in unsound mind, noting his depression from financial losses due to the drought and that he had been severely gassed and shellshocked during World War I.[7] EducationThere are no schools in Stoneleigh but primary and secondary schools are available in neighbouring Pittsworth.[5] References1. ^{{cite QPN|48070|Stoneleigh|locality in Toowoomba Region|accessdate=6 February 2019}} {{Toowoomba Region}}{{Queensland-geo-stub}}2. ^1 {{Census 2016 AUS|id=SSC32696|name=Stoneleigh (SSC)|accessdate=20 October 2018|quick=on}} 3. ^{{Cite QPN|26091|Parkers|hill in the Toowoomba Region|accessdate=6 February 2019}} 4. ^{{Cite QPN|26092|Parkers Hill|hill in the Toowoomba Region|accessdate=6 February 2019}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://qldglobe.information.qld.gov.au/|title=Queensland Globe|publisher=State of Queensland|accessdate=6 February 2019}} 6. ^{{Citation|author1=Queensland Family History Society|title=Queensland schools past and present|publication-date=2010|edition=Version 1.01|publisher=Queensland Family History Society|isbn=978-1-921171-26-0}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article173211658|title=Stoneleigh Tragedy.|date=2 August 1935|newspaper=Daily Mercury|accessdate=6 February 2019|issue=183|location=Queensland, Australia|volume=69,|page=7|via=National Library of Australia}} 1 : Toowoomba Region |
