The Sumner family is a prominent Massachusetts political family that traces its ancestry back to William Sumner, born in Bicester, England who emigrated to become an early settler of Dorchester, Massachusetts, now part of Boston.[1]. Among his many descendants are:

  • Increase Sumner, an early governor of the State of Massachusetts
  • William H. Sumner, son of Increase and early Massachusetts historian
  • Charles Sumner, distant cousin of Increase and William, and abolitionist U.S. Senator during the U.S. Civil War
  • Edwin Vose Sumner, Union general during the U.S. Civil War, first cousin once removed of Charles Sumner.
  • Edwin Vose Sumner Jr., son of Edwin Vose Sumner and Union general during the U.S. Civil War
  • Samuel S. Sumner, son of Edwin Vose Sumner Sr. and U.S. Army general during the later 19th century.
