{{Multiple issues|{{copy edit|date=April 2019|for=tone}}{{lead rewrite|date=April 2019|reason=lead should reflect what makes the organization notable and key idea of each section heading}}}}Survived & Punished (S&P) is an American nonprofit that advocates for the abolition of prisons on the belief that all forms of law enforcement and punitive prosecution are rooted in systems of violence.[1][2] They focus on women who are abused before entering prison, which is estimated to be around 60% of women in United States' prisons,[3] and those who are arrested for defending themselves from domestic and intimate partner violence.[1][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

History

A combination of activists speaking out against the imprisonment of Marissa Alexander and Nan-Hui Jo and other organizations such as INCITE! and the California Coalition for Women Prisoners met and discussed the limitations of freedoms offered to women in prisons, and the arrest and detainment of women who, like Marissa Alexander and Nan-Hui Jo, are arrested and punished for defending themselves from domestic violence.[1]

Notable work

S&P cites many examples of people who, after defending themselves from violence, were imprisoned or mistreated by law enforcement, such as:[11]

  • Marissa Alexander, who after firing a non-harmful warning shot in response to her husband's violent attack was given a sentence with a mandatory minimum of 20 years[12]
  • Cyntoia Brown, who killed a man who solicited her for sex at age 14 and was sentenced to 60 years in prison[13]
  • Marcela Rodriguez, who after calling police during a domestic violence incident was arrested, given to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and forced into deportation proceedings[14][15]
  • Nan-Hui Jo, who after fleeing her violent American citizen partner with her young daughter was arrested for child abduction[16]
  • The New Jersey 4, who fought against racist, misogynist, and homophobic sexual violence in their neighborhood were called a "killer lesbian gang" by prosecutors and media[17]
  • Ky Peterson, who after defending himself from sexual assault was bullied into signing a "plea deal" and sentenced to 20 years in prison[18]
