Sweetness in the Belly is an upcoming drama film directed by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, based on the novel of the same name by Camilla Gibb.

Premise

An orphan in Ethiopia spins escapes as a refugee to England, where upon growing up she works to aid fellow immigrants and refugees in reuniting with their families.

Production

The film was announced in January 2017, with Saoirse Ronan initially set to star in the leading role.^[1]

By October 2018, Ronan has departed the project, with Dakota Fanning cast to replace her. Wunmi Mosaku, Kunal Nayyar and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II were also cast, with filming beginning in Ireland. Filming also occurred in Ethiopia.^[2][3]
