She received her PhD in biological oceanography from the University of Rhode Island and has an honorary PhD from Utrecht University. She si a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.[2] She is recognized for her research on how humans affected and changed natural processes, and is recognized for the real-world value of her work.[3][4].
