It was established by Pope Francis on 10 October 2017, and Raphael Thattil was appointed its first bishop.[2] In a letter to the bishops of India, Francis cited India's decades of experience with "overlapping jurisdictions" of different sui iuris churches. He wrote: "With the growth of spiritual friendship and mutual assistance, any tension or apprehension should be swiftly overcome. May this extension of the pastoral area of the Syro-Malabar Church in no way be perceived as a growth in power and domination, but as a call to deeper communion, which should never be perceived as uniformity."[3] The new jurisdiction was inaugurated with Thattil's installation on 7 January 2018.[4] The cathedral is the St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Church at Kukatpally, in Greater Hyderabad. There are 1.3 lakh Catholics in the Shamshabad diocese with 11 functional churches and seven under construction.[1] References1. ^1 {{cite press release |url = http://www.syromalabarchurch.in/news_details.php?news=8117 |title=New Eparchy of Shamshabad| publisher = Syro-Malabar Church | accessdate = 11 July 2018 | date= 10 October 2017}} 2. ^{{cite press release |url= http://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2017/10/10/171010d.html | publisher =Holy See Press Office |title= Provisions for the Syro-Malabar Church, 10.10.2017 |accessdate=11 July 2018 | date= 10 October 2017}} 3. ^{{cite document | accessdate= 11 July 2018|date=9 October 2017|title=Letter of the Holy Father|publisher= Holy See Press Office| url = http://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2017/10/10/171010b.html}} 4. ^{{cite news | title=Kerala church gets back all-India jurisdiction with Shamshabad diocese | url = https://indianexpress.com/article/india/kerala-church-gets-back-all-india-jurisdiction-with-shamshabad-diocese-5015260/ | work = The Indian Express | accessdate = 11 July 2018 | date= 7 January 2018 | agency = PTI}} External links
