Tabung Harapan Malaysia is a fund launched by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on 30 May 2018 and will be closed on 31 December 2018.[1][2] The purpose of the fund is a platform for the people to help the country and to receive the people's donations to strengthen the government's finances. The establishment of the fund was made after seeing the willingness of the people to donate to the government to reduce the country's debt amounting to more than RM1 trillion. As of 30 August 2018, the Fund has earned a sum of RM179,947,434.22, or nearly RM180 million to date. DisputeThe former Malaysian opposition leader, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi accuses the government of taking a populist approach by launching Tabung Harapan Malaysia.[3] He slammed the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government’s decision to launch Tabung Harapan Malaysia, by saying that the government should not burden the people to donate funds in order to help it meet its debt obligations. “To be a populist government, they seek funds from the people, whereas the people are already burdened with all kinds of taxes.
