Tampere Technical Society is the oldest technical society in Finland. In 2018, it celebrates its 125 years anniversary [1]. At first, all activities were carried out in Swedish and later solely in Finnish. In 2018 it began to operate also in English.

Tampere

At its start in 1893 Tampere was the industrial center of Finland. The society served as a technical committee of Tampere and the outcome can be seen in the city still today – Grand Hotel Tammer, water supply system[2], fifth European city with electric lightning (after Paris, Strasbourg, Milan and London). The newest addition will be the tramway in Tampere, a plan that was originally suggested by the society a hundred years ago! [3]

Technical

The society significantly influenced the establishment of technical education in Tampere[4] based on the demand for skilled labour during the early decades of the society. It helped to establish the engineering school (now Tampere University of Applied Sciences) and later the technical university (Tampere University of Technology). TTS funds also university education as a funding member of the TUT Foundation[5] and it financially supports also education of natural sciences in the elementary and secondary schools via LuMaTe program. It awards a Technology prize to local companies for significant business development.

Society

The society has more than 700 technical engineers and architects living in Tampere region. Most of the members have a master’s degree and there is a growing number of members with a doctoral degree. Many gained their degree at Tampere University of Technology, but there are also members, who moved to Tampere from other cities or countries and joined to gain a local network of professionals (and friends). There are many industrial members ranging from R&D scientists, technical salesmen, CEOs, entrepreneurs as well as professionals in academia including students, lecturers and professors.

Logo

The logo is a combination of a Grand Hotel Tammer silhouette and a gear (for engineering). The hotel was built by TTS in 1929 as its club and a hotel with a novelty – a garage[6]. Nowadays, the hotel is no longer operated by TTS, but it still serves as its homebase.

Activities

There are several active divisions organized around different professional and fun topics: Junior members, Culture, Fishing, Golf, Professional development and a newly forming International Club. The society organizes excursions to many interesting local companies (for instance Coxa, Sandvik) as well as it organizes meetings in exciting locations (for instance hotel Torni, Polyclinic Tipotie). Aside from professional activities such as mentoring and networking, it is known for annual balls, wine&sing, crab feast, Wappu, for its sporting events – golf tournaments, fishing trips or rowing and other.

A book by Paju and Mauranen reviewing the history of the Tampere Technical Society [6] was published in 2018 to commemorate the 125 years of its existence.
