Professor David FitzPatrick is the inaugural president of TU Dublin. HistoryCity of Dublin Technical SchoolsTU Dublin has its origins in the City of Dublin Technical Schools, with a Technical College founded at Kevin Street[7] in 1887 by poet, songwriter and novelist Arnold Felix Graves. Amalgamation of Institutes of TechnologyIn 2014, the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB) and Institute of Technology, Tallaght (ITT) jointly entered into a formal process to merge into a university.[8][9] At the time, following the "Institutes of Technology Act of 2006",[10] there were fourteen IT's in Ireland, and a political appetite[11] emerged to amalgamate several to form a more advanced third-level institution, known as a technological university,[12] similar to that of Delft and other technological universities in Europe.[13] The Dublin bid, proposed by the three institutes, eventually coalesced in 2014 to seek designation as a technological university under the project title "Technological University for Dublin Alliance" / "TU4Dublin".[2][12][14] A final application was submitted in April 2018, following the signing into law by President Michael D. Higgins of the "Technological Universities Act 2018".[15] The formation of the Technological University of Dublin was approved in July 2018, and the university was formally established on 1 January 2019,[3][4] on which date the preceding institutions were dissolved.[16] FacilitiesThe university consists of three main campuses, located in Grangegorman, Blanchardstown, and Tallaght respectively - the campuses previously of DIT, ITB, and ITT, the institutes which have amalgamated.[2][17] The Grangegorman campus will complete ongoing relocation of activities at Kevin Street and Cathal Brugha Street, expanding its capacity to 10,000 students, while development is planned for the other two campuses during the formative years of the university.[18] According to the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, the new university will have an "entrepreneurial ethos", and will offer degrees and programmes ranging from Level 6 to Level 10 in the National Framework of Qualifications.[19] While having an emphasis on computer science and STEM subjects, given its status as a technological university, Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton stated that the university will aim to sit at "convergence of the arts, business, science and technology."[19] Students' UnionThe Technological University Dublin Students' Union (TUDSU) was established by referendum in February 2019 as the amalgamation of DIT Students' Union, IT Tallaght Student Union and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown Student Union.[20] Plans for other TUs{{see |Technological Universities in Ireland}}Similar institutions are planned in the south-east (TUSE), south west (Munster Technological University) and north-west (Connacht-Ulster Alliance).[21] {{Portal|Dublin}}References1. ^{{cite web |title=TU Dublin Partners Named Sunday Times Good University Guide Institutes of the Year |date=5 November 2018 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20181106173527/http://www.dit.ie/newsandevents/news/archive2018/latest/title,166906,en.html |deadurl=no |website=DIT.ie |url=http://www.dit.ie/newsandevents/news/archive2018/latest/title,166906,en.html |accessdate=6 November 2018 |archivedate=6 November 2018}} {{Institutes of Technology in Ireland|state=expanded}}{{Universities in Ireland}}{{Schools and colleges in County Dublin}}{{Authority Control}}2. ^1 2 {{cite web |archivedate=17 July 2018 |deadurl=no |accessdate=17 July 2018 |publisher=Technological University for Dublin |archiveurl=|title=A New University for a Changing World |url=https://www.tu4dublin.ie/news/a-new-university-for-a-changing-world/}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |via=facebook.com |publisher=Dublin Institute of Technology |url=https://www.facebook.com/dublininstituteoftechnology/videos/10155313849631086/ |title=Announcement by An Taoiseach |date=17 July 2018 |accessdate=17 July 2018}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |title=Application for designation as Ireland's first Technological University has been successful! |url=https://www.facebook.com/dublininstituteoftechnology/photos/a.418760826085.200527.181376146085/10155313569641086 |publisher=Dublin Institute of Technology |via=facebook.com |date=17 July 2018 |accessdate=17 July 2018}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2018/0717/979172-technological_university/|title=Approval to be given for Ireland's first technological university|author=O'Kelly, Emma|publisher=RTÉ|date=17 July 2018|access-date=17 July 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.siliconrepublic.com/innovation/technological-university-dublin|title=Dublin set to get a brand new technological university|author=Kennedy, John|publisher=Silicon Republic|date=17 July 2018|access-date=17 July 2018}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=http://builtdublin.com/dublin-institute-of-technology-kevin-street-dublin-8/ |title=Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street, Dublin 8 |author=Lisa Cassidy |date= |website=Built Dublin |publisher= |access-date=2019-01-06}} 8. ^{{cite news |title=Institutes or technical universities?
