He was born in Hull and educated at the University of Leeds, where he received his BA (1921) and MA (1922).[1] He gained his BLitt from Oriel College, Oxford.[1] From 1925 to 1928 he was an assistant lecturer at the University of Glasgow.[1] Jessop was the first member of Hull University's philosophy department and the first Ferens Professor of Philosophy (1928–1960).[1] In 1946 he was joined at the department by 'ordinary language' philosopher Alan R. White who succeeded Jessop to the Ferens Chair in 1961[2]. His book The Treaty of Versailles: Was it Just? concluded that the 1919 peace treaty was overall a just one.[3] Works
