Located below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, surrounding Lake Duluti, Tengeru has a temperate climate. The town is just thirteen kilometers east of the city of Arusha.[3]HistoryIn 1934, Kenyon Painter, an American investor, established a coffee research station at Tengeru,[4] which today is operated by the Lyamungu Research Institute of the Tanzania Ministry of Agriculture and known as the National Centre for Coffee Research.[5] Beginning in 1942 and continuing after World War II, a camp for displaced persons from eastern Europe was established at Tengeru, just south of Lake Duluti. It primarily housed Poles, who were then resettled in the United States, Australia, northern Europe and other countries. At its height it housed over 4,000 people, but now all that remains of the camp is its large cemetery.[2][6][7][8] The dairy and beef cattle farm that was run by the internees was taken over in 1952 by the Ministry of Agriculture and became the Tengeru Horticultural Research and Training Institute (HORTI).[9] Today, Tengeru has become a suburb of Arusha.[10] Notes and references1. ^ {{Clear}}2. ^1 {{Cite news|author=Mayallah, Elisha |date=14 March 2009 |title=Journey to the Polish Refugees Cemetery in Tengeru |newspaper= Arusha Times |issue=558 |location=Arusha, Tanzania|url=http://www.arushatimes.co.tz/2009/10/society_5.htm |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131217081349/http://www.arushatimes.co.tz/2009/10/society_5.htm |archivedate=17 December 2013 |deadurl=no}} 3. ^{{Cite web|title=Tengeru Cultural |publisher=Tanzania Cultural Tourism Programme |url=http://tanzaniaculturaltourism.go.tz/index.php/tengeru-cultural |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160407060631/http://tanzaniaculturaltourism.go.tz/index.php/tengeru-cultural |archivedate=7 April 2016 |deadurl=no}} 4. ^{{Cite book|author=Herne, Brian |year=1999 |title=White Hunters: The golden age of African Safaris |location=New York |publisher=Henry Holt (Macmillan)|page=202 |isbn=978-0-8050-5919-9}} 5. ^{{Cite web|title=Northern Zone: Research Institutes/Centres |publisher=Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Cooperatives |location=Tanzania |url=http://www.agriculture.go.tz/organization%20structure/ard/northern%20zone.html |archiveurl= |archivedate= |deadurl=no}} 6. ^{{Cite news|author=Abraham, Curtis|title=How East Africa became home for Polish exiles |date=16 October 2016 |newspaper=The EastAfrican | url=http://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/magazine/How-East-Africa-became-home-for-Polish-exiles/434746-3417142-j1carr/index.html |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161018001541/http://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/magazine/How-East-Africa-became-home-for-Polish-exiles/434746-3417142-j1carr/index.html |archivedate=18 October 2016 |deadurl=no}} 7. ^{{Cite book|author=Taylor, Lynne |year=2009 |title=Polish Orphans of Tengeru: The Dramatic Story of Their Long Journey to Canada, 1941-49 |location=Toronto |publisher=Dundurn |isbn=978-1-55488-004-1}} 8. ^{{Cite book|author=Szostak, Henryk |year=2013 |chapter=Tengeru East Africa |title=American by Choice |pages=89–145|location= |publisher=Xlibris |isbn=978-1-4836-6589-4}}{{Self-published inline|certain=yes|date=January 2018}} 9. ^{{Cite web|title=Northern Zone: Research Institutes/Centres |year=2001|publisher=Department of Research and Development, Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security |url=http://www.drd.mafs.go.tz/northern.htm |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20060816033050/http://www.drd.mafs.go.tz/northern.htm |archivedate=16 August 2006 |deadurl=yes}} 10. ^{{Cite web|title=Arusha-Tengeru highway construction begins |date=22 June 2015 |publisher=Wanted in Africa |url=http://www.wantedinafrica.com/news/arusha-tengeru-highway-construction-begins/ |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160429184602/http://www.wantedinafrica.com/news/arusha-tengeru-highway-construction-begins/ |archivedate=29 April 2016 |deadurl=no}} 1 : Populated places in Arusha Region |
