Early lifeHe was born in Helen’s Bay, County Down. Millin was a distinguished mathematics graduate of Trinity College Dublin and a sportsman, representing both Dublin University and Ireland at rugby. He graduated in medicine. CareerMillin achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Practicing genito-urinary surgery in various hospitals in London, his practice grew through the 1930s. On 1 December 1945 The Lancet published a paper by Millin on an original surgical approach to the partial or complete removal of the prostate, “Retropubic Prostatectomy. A new extravesical technique. Report on twenty cases.”[1] Millin followed this up with Retropubic Urinary Surgery[2] which contained further observations on prostatectomies and other surgical procedures. Millin's techniques became successful and he became much in demand in Europe,,the US and Australia. He returned to Dublin and from the 1960’s focussed on contributing to the development of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland RCSI. He was elected President of RCSI in 1963-1966. He oversaw the expansion of the undergraduate medical school and the development of new College facilities. RCSI commemorated Terence Millin in the annual Millin Scientific Meeting and by naming a student residence in his honour. References
