The Texas Girls' Choir is a nonprofit organization based in North Texas. About 100 girls, between ages 8 and 12, perform in the choir. AboutThe Texas Girls' Choir is made up of around 100 girls between the ages of 8 and 12 from the North Texas region.[1] Rehearsals are held twice a week and the choir performs choreographed works, foreign-language songs and other programs.[1][2] The organization was founded in 1962 by Shirley Carter in Fort Worth, Texas.[3] There had been many boys' choirs in the region, but no girls' choirs during the 1960s.[4] The choir was fully integrated, during the time when segregation was legal, and included African-American girls from the beginning.[4] The choir was first called the City Girls' Choir, and was incorporated in 1965 as the Texas Girls' Choir.[3] It was the first girl's choir in the United States to be incorporated.[5] The choir first performed in the Fort Worth downtown YWCA and later at the First Baptist Church.[4] The group found a permanent home in 1973.[4] The choir has performed in over 46 different countries.[6] In 1970, the choir was invited to perform in Tel Aviv in the Tel Aviv Youth Center and also sang at the Mount of Beatitudes.[7] After Carter died, one of the original members of the first choir group, Debi Weir, took over as executive director in 2002.[5] Weir had been working as the administrative assistant since 1980.[5] Weir died in 2015.[8] References1. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.fwweekly.com/2015/11/25/texas-girls-choir-time/|title=Texas Girls’ Choir Time|last=Brown|first=Edward|date=25 November 2015|website=Fort Worth Weekly|page=1|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2017-08-02}} 2. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.fwweekly.com/2015/11/25/texas-girls-choir-time/2/|title=Texas Girls’ Choir Time|last=Brown|first=Edward|date=25 November 2015|website=Fort Worth Weekly|page=2|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2017-08-02}} 3. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/12810442/|title=Woman's Club Begins Yuletide With Song|last=|first=|date=30 November 1975|work=Grand Prairie Daily News|access-date=2 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} 4. ^1 2 3 {{Cite web|url=https://www.fwweekly.com/2015/11/25/texas-girls-choir-time/3/|title=Texas Girls’ Choir Time|last=Brown|first=Edward|date=25 November 2015|website=Fort Worth Weekly|page=3|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2017-08-02}} 5. ^1 2 {{Cite news|url=http://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/community/fort-worth/article49730335.html|title=Texas Girls’ Choir mourns loss of leader|last=Smith|first=Diane|date=14 December 2015|work=Star-Telegram|access-date=2017-08-02|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|language=en}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.twu.edu/twhf/honorees/shirley-carter/|title=Shirley Carter|last=|first=|date=|website=Texas Women's Hall of Fame|publisher=Texas Woman's University|language=en|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2017-08-02}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/12810224/|title=Girls' Choir Schedules Holy Land Christmas Trip|last=|first=|date=9 November 1970|work=Grand Prairie Daily News|access-date=2 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.fwweekly.com/2015/12/15/remembering-girls-choir-director-debra-debi-weir/|title=Remembering Girl's Choir Director Debra "Debi" Weir|last=Brown|first=Edward|date=15 December 2015|website=- Fort Worth Weekly|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2017-08-02}} External links
