Khanom thung thong ({{lang-th|ขนมถุงทอง}}), also known in English as Thai money bag, is a Thai savory snack.

Toong tong is a traditional appetizer of Thai people. The name “Toong tong” comes from the Thai word meaning golden bags. When Thai people give it to others, it means they wish them to have money or gold. It is usually given during the New Year festival.

History

Thai money bag is part of the Thai Royal Cuisine. The food is created by people who are members of the royal family. Thai royal cuisine is acknowledged in the Rattanakosin Period. Usually, Thai royal cuisine is made by commoners but the ingredients are fresher and the preparations are more complicated. Lalubare, the King's envoy of France said, “At the Phra na rai Maharaj, there is a record that Thai royal cuisine is a normal food for commoners but have a beautiful presentation e.g. they serve fish with no bone.” After a royal moves out to form their own family, they created their own unique recipe.[1]

In the past, Toong tong used to be served on occasions such as weddings, but nowadays Toong tong is more likely to be served at a luxurious party or Chinese banquet.
