The sixth season of The Amazing Race Canada (also known as The Amazing Race Canada: Heroes Edition[1]) is a reality game show based on the American series The Amazing Race. It features ten teams of two consisting of everyday Canadian heroes.[2] The grand prize includes: a {{CAD|250000}} cash payout, a "once-in-a-lifetime" trip for two around the world, and a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse Redline for each.[2] For the sixth year in a row, Jon Montgomery returned as the host.

The season premiered on July 3, 2018.[3]

Engaged couple Courtney Berglind and Adam Kovacs were the winners of this season.[4] They are the first male/female team to win The Amazing Race Canada.

Production

Development

On October 12, 2017, CTV announced that the show was renewed for its sixth season.[5]

Filming of The Amazing Race Canada 6 began on April 23, 2018, when the show's Facebook page broadcast the start of the Race during its first of six "Jon on the Road: Presented by Chevrolet Facebook Live",[6] which featured Devon Soltendieck of etalk interviewing host Jon Montgomery at the starting line, Hatley Gardens in Colwood, British Columbia, before the Race commenced.[7] The five subsequent livestreams featured Jon during filming of the Race offering hints about destinations on the racecourse.

This season's visit to Fredericton, New Brunswick meant that all 13 of Canada's provincial and territorial capitals have been featured at least once in the six seasons of the Canadian Race.

Season 5 winners Sam Lambert and Paul Mitskopoulos were the local Pit Stop greeters of Leg 6 in their hometown of Toronto.

During the airing of the episode for Leg 10, a message in white on a black background ("Dedicated to the people of Fredericton, New Brunswick") indirectly recognized that the Fredericton shooting had occurred since the filming of the leg and prior to the episode airing.

This was the first season of The Amazing Race Canada to place the Leg 4 and Leg 6 U-Turn boards at their Detour decision points rather than after the Detours. This was also the first season of the Canadian Race that did not visit the province of Quebec.

Casting

The cast included Olympic bronze medalist in skeleton Mellisa Hollingsworth.

Marketing

Chevrolet continued sponsoring the show and was the sole sponsor of the Facebook Live events.[1] Canadian Tire's outfitter brand Woods also continued their sponsorship from the previous season. New sponsors are Alcon Dailies contact lenses, Dempster's Bakery, Royal Canadian Legion and SkipTheDishes.[8]

  • A {{red|red}} team placement means the team was eliminated.
  • An {{blue|underlined blue}} team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump during the next leg of the race.
  • An underlined leg number indicates that there was no mandatory rest period at the Pit Stop and all teams were ordered to continue racing. The first place team was still awarded a prize on that leg. An underlined team's placement indicates that that team came in last on a "continue racing" leg and were not eliminated.
  • A {{purple|purple ε}} indicates that the team had previously found an Express Pass and used it on that leg.
  • A {{brown|brown ⊃}} or a {{cyan|cyan ⋑}} indicates that the team chose to use one of the two U-Turns in a Double U-Turn, respectively; {{brown|⊂}} or {{cyan|⋐}} indicates the team who received it. If {{cyan|⋐}}{{cyan|⋑}} is next to a leg number, it indicates that the second U-Turn was not used.
  • An {{orange (color)|orange +}} next to a leg number indicates that there was a Face Off on that leg of the race, while an {{orange (color)|orange −}} indicates the team that lost the Face Off and received a pre-determined time penalty.

  1. {{note|1}} Two teams who found an Express Pass in Leg 2 − Todd & Anna and Leanne & Mar − chose to use theirs to bypass the pie-eating task in Leg 3.
  2. {{note|2}} Nancy & Melissa chose to use the Express Pass they found in Leg 2 to bypass the fairy doors search task in Leg 3.
  3. {{note|3}} Four teams (Martina & Phil, Courtney & Adam, Dylan & Kwame and Leanne & Mar) were unable to check into the Pit Stop as they had stepped on the Pit Stop mat without their backpacks, and were told to go back to retrieve them before being allowed to check-in. Only the placement for Martina & Phil was affected; dropping them from 2nd to 3rd place.
  4. {{note|4}} Leanne & Mar initially arrived 4th, but were issued a 2-hour penalty when a severe onset of claustrophobia prevented Leanne from completing the zombie paintball challenge. The last two teams trailing them (Martina & Phil and Dylan & Kwame) checked-in during the penalty time, dropping them to last place and resulting in their elimination.

In Fit, one team member at a time had to memorize and complete four fitness test exercises including twenty meter rushes, sandbag lifts, intermittent loaded shuttles, and a sandbag drag. If teams could correctly complete the exercises in a combined time of less than eighteen minutes, they would then receive their next clue. In Fly, teams had to operate a Griffon helicopter flight simulator. They had to navigate a simulation of Downtown Montreal and successfully land on the roof of the Bell Centre in under five minutes to receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to listen to six questions from a Wolastoqiyik elder in Wolastoqey about six Wolastoqiyik paintings inside the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Team members had to find out which painting corresponded to which question by observing the paintings' English and Wolastoqey descriptions and had to respond to the questions with the correct Wolastoqey painting title to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At Officers' Square, teams had to watch a changing of the guard ceremony, then watch a seemingly-similar ceremony at City Hall; both performed by members of The Royal Canadian Regiment. Teams had to spot the one difference between the two ceremonies (the ceremonial guard at Officers' Square take one extra step) and tell the commander to receive their next clue.
  • After the Detour, teams travelled to the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium, where they found the final Face Off of the season. Teams competed against each other in a game of 3-on-3 fifteen minute wheelchair basketball using half the court. Each team would receive one additional player who could pass but could not block or score. The team with the most points after fifteen minutes would receive their next clue, while the loser had to wait for another team. The last team remaining at the Face Off had to turn over an hourglass and wait out a time penalty before moving on.

Leg 11 (New Brunswick → Alberta)

  • Banff (Banff National Park Administration Building and Banff Avenue)
  • Banff (Bow River)
  • Banff (Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Club – Tunnel Nine 5th Hole) {{TAR clue|Pit Stop Canada}}

In the first Roadblock of this leg, one team member had to enter an air traffic control simulation room and had to memorize, without taking notes, a thirty-second automatic terminal information service transmission containing meteorological information surrounding the airport. After memorizing the transmission, team members had to make their way to the top of the tower and had to correctly recite the transmission to the Nav Canada senior controller to receive their next clue.

In the final Roadblock of the Race, the team member who did not perform the first Roadblock had to participate in two winter sports. First, they would be harnessed to two dogs and had to ski two laps around a skijoring track. Then the team member had to complete the Slush Cup by sledding on a marked course down one of the resort's ski runs and across a pool of cold water to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • Upon arrival in Calgary, teams had to search the airport for their next clue, located near the control tower.
  • After completing the first Roadblock, teams made their way to Apron 2 and took a helicopter ride to Mount Fable. Upon landing atop the mountain, they had to search for their next clue. Teams then took off again to land in Canmore at the helicopter company's home base to proceed by taxi to Sunshine Village in Banff.
  • At Banff National Park Administration Building, teams were directed to search ten marked stores along Banff Avenue to find at least two marked souvenirs that represented items or tasks they encountered from each of the 11 legs of the Race. Some legs were represented by more than two souvenirs. After finding the souvenirs, teams had to return to the Banff National Park Administration Building and place the souvenirs on a display in the proper order to receive their next clue.
