The novel is set in the same universe as Trainspotting, catching up with Begbie's past and present. SynopsisBegbie, going by the name of Jim Francis, is now a Scottish expatriate artist in California and returns to Scotland for a funeral.[1] His wife Melanie and their two daughters suddenly realize that Jim has a dark past.[1] Critical receptionThe novel was reviewed in many newspapers. It received mostly good reviews. In a review for The Daily Telegraph, Orlando Bird called it "lean, clever and propulsive".[2] Meanwhile, Hannah McGill of The Scotsman commended Welsh's perceptive description of the "divisions that rend families, and the minor lies and delusions that sustain relationships"[3] Writing for The London Magazine, Erik Martiny called it a "resourceful, engagingly lively novel", but stressed that its "main interest derives less from its detective novel scenario than from Welsh’s ability to explore his protagonist’s inner struggle to contain the beast within."[4] In the Oxonian Review, Callum Seddon suggested the novel was "a take on the established trope of ‘the double’ in Scottish literature".[5] Meanwhile, Sunil Badami of The Australian assessed that the novel was "lean and purposeful", and a quick read.[6] Reviewing it for The Guardian, Sarah Diturn suggested the characters were "unconvincing".[7] She added, "As detective fiction it’s shakily assembled, as a horror novel it can’t outpace cinematic torture porn, and as social realism it routinely sends its own plausibility up in smoke."[7] References1. ^1 {{cite web|title=The Blade Artist|url=https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/1108117/the-blade-artist/|website=Penguin Books|accessdate=May 3, 2016}} {{Irvine Welsh}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Blade Artist}}{{2010s-novel-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|last1=Bird|first1=Orlando|title=The Blade Artist by Irvine Welsh: a lean thriller about Trainspotting's Begbie|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/books/what-to-read/the-blade-artist-by-irvine-welsh-a-lean-thriller-about-trainspot/|accessdate=May 3, 2016|work=The Daily Telegraph|date=April 8, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite news|last1=McGill|first1=Hannah|title=Book review: The Blade Artist by Irvine Welsh |url=http://www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/culture/books/book-review-the-blade-artist-by-irvine-welsh-1-4088727 |accessdate=May 3, 2016|work=The Scotsman|date=April 2, 2016}} 4. ^{{cite news|last1=Martiny|first1=Erik|title=The Blade Artist by Irvine Welsh|url=http://www.thelondonmagazine.org/the-blade-artist-by-irvine-welsh/|accessdate=May 3, 2016|work=The London Magazine|date=April 4, 2016}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=Seddon|first1=Callum|title=The Blade Artist|url=http://www.oxonianreview.org/wp/the-blade-artist/|accessdate=May 3, 2016|work=The Oxonian Review|date=April 27, 2016}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Badami|first1=Sunil|title=Irvine Welsh back with the bams in The Blade Artist|url=http://www.theaustralian.com.au/arts/review/irvine-welsh-back-with-the-bams-in-the-blade-artist/news-story/4b5b51d474d37d21b2aad1794cb58fd5|accessdate=May 3, 2016|work=The Australian|date=April 30, 2016}} 7. ^1 {{cite news|last1=Ditum|first1=Sarah|title=The Blade Artist by Irvine Welsh review – a troublesome follow-up to Trainspotting|url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/apr/07/the-blade-artist-by-irvine-welsh-review|accessdate=May 3, 2016|work=The Guardian|date=April 7, 2016}} 5 : Novels by Irvine Welsh|2016 British novels|Novels set in California|Novels set in Scotland|Novels about sociopathy |
