The D10 is a philanthropic-based amateur athletics events tour that hosts decathlon style events for company employee teams and individuals entrants. The D10 rigorously tracks competitor performance with scoring for both athletic achievement and charitable fundraising for pediatric cancer research. Athlete participants who raise $10,000 or more each year are recognized as members of the 10K Club. To date, The D10 athletes have raised more than $12.4 million for charity.

History

[https://thed10.com/ The D10] was founded in New York City in 2009 by Dave Maloney[1] and Marc Hodulich, former Auburn University track teammates who worked as financial analysts on Wall Street. The event was originally dubbed, "The Decathlon", though the nickname, "The Wall Street Decathlon"[2] soon took over in the local media. In the initial years of the event, numerous Wall Street banking firm's employees competed for points in on-field athletic events combined with performance-based fundraising based on donor pledges. Funds raised were donated for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

In 2016, The Decathlon was officially renamed, The D10, to distinguish the amateur sports event from an actual Olympic Decathlon event and to highlight the philanthropic fundraising component of the series. In this same year, The D10 expanded from New York City, to tour stops in San Francisco, Chicago, and Houston[3]. In each of the new cities, The D10 took on the corporate competitor and fundraising look and feel of the dominant industries in each of the new host cities.

On June 25, 2016, NBC Sports aired a one-hour sports special covering the 2016 D10 New York[4].

In 2017, Olympic Gold Medalist, Adam Nelson, joined The D10 to supervise athlete experience and design a D10-specific training program. Nelson earned the Silver Medal in Men's Shot put at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the Gold Medal in the Men's Shot put in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, in addition to the Gold Medal at the 2005 IAAF World Championship in Helsinki.

In 2019, The D10 announced an expansion of its event and charity fundraising tour stops to six additional cities: Philadelphia, Columbus, Denver, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Austin.

The D10 Events

The D10 suggests that its ten athletic events are derived from a combination of the original Olympic Decathlon, the annual NFL Draft Combine, and schoolyard games.[5]

The ten events are: 400 meter run, Football throw, Pull-ups , 40 yard dash, Broad (long) jump, 500 meter row (on a seated rowing machine), Vertical (high) jump, 20 yard shuttle, Bench press, and an 800 meter run. Given that these events all take place in a single day over the course of approximately five hours, endurance becomes a large factor.

The D10's typically take place on college campuses within the Tour stop city. Scores and updates are streamed live to TheD10.com and their proprietary app, NORMA[6], which allows donors to make active charity bids on head-to-head challenges or goal-busting performances between athletes in real time. In this manner, The D10 utilizes the thrill of the live event competition to promote charitable fundraising.

Well-Known Entrants

While many amateur adult athletes who compete in The D10 are former college or high school standout athletes, the even has had its share of more notable athlete participant and fundraisers.

Former collegiate football standout, Mark Rubin, has been dubbed "Wall Street's Best Athlete" after winning The D10 New York five years in a row, 2012-2016[7]. (A year later, Rubin was dubbed "The Beast of Wall Street" by a different news outlet.[8]) Not surprising, Rubin was drafted by the then St. Louis Rams in 2009, before joining the financial services industry.

Super Bowl XLV winning safety, Michael Greco often routinely competes in The D10 events.

The "Dan and Dave Rivalry"

In 1992, U.S. Decathlete standouts, Dan O'Brien and Dave Johnson, were splashed across every major media outlet in advance of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Both American athletes were world-ranked and expected by many to compete against one another for the Gold Medal in The Decathlon that summer. However, Dan O'Brien disqualified himself with a fault in the pole vault during the U.S. Olympic Trials and never made the team for Barcelona. Dave Johnson fractured his foot during the course of The Decathlon competition and settled for the Bronze Medal.

22-years later, in 2014, Dan O'Brien, who had competed in The D10 the year earlier, and Dave Johnson met again in the 2014 D10 New York. Dave Johnson noted his agreement to participate was to regain some of the athletic and fitness competitiveness of his younger days, being now 51 at the time of this event. Sports Illustrated covered the renewed rivalry[9].
