The Firs is a country house in Whitchurch, Buckinghamshire. HistoryThe house was built in 1897 for Charles Gray, an officer who fought with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa.[1] By the 1930s the house was owned by Major Arthur Abrahams from whom it was requisitioned by the War Office in 1939.[2] During the Second World War the house was used by MD1 for the development and testing of various weapons[3] including time delay fuses, depth charges and PIAT guns.[4] The house, which was known locally as "Winston Churchill's Toyshop", accommodated some 250 people at this time.[5] Meanwhile Abrahams was knighted for his services to the British Red Cross in June 1942.[6] In around 1953 the house became the Central Research Laboratories for Richard Thomas and Baldwins, iron and steel producers.[7] This use continued until 1967 when Richard Thomas and Baldwins was nationalised as part of British Steel.[7] The house has since been converted into offices[4] and is now owned by Christopher Mann, Chairman of Plenham Publishing.[8] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/account/welcome?NextPage=%2fsearchbna%2fviewrecord%2fbl%2f0000270%2f19020906%2f052%2f0008|title=Whitchurch: funeral|publisher=Buckinghamshire Herald |date= 6 September 1902|accessdate=23 October 2016}} {{coord|51.8768|N| 0.8331|W|region:GB-BKM_type:landmark|display=title}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=tnaoAwAAQBAJ&pg=PT96&lpg=PT96&dq=The+Firs,+Whitchurch+Major&source=bl&ots=dMYtUXhLMO&sig=yW33165rP7Or85iVXzf-D2OFock&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjM1YvBmvHPAhVRGsAKHVJrAh44ChDoAQhRMAk#v=onepage&q=The%20Firs%2C%20Whitchurch%20Major&f=false|title=Winston Churchill's Toyshop: The Inside Story of Military Intelligence|first=Stuart |last=MacRae|publisher=Amberley|year=2011|isbn= 978-1445603704}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/media/130604/whitchurch.pdf|title=Whitchurch Historic Town Assessment|publisher=Buckinghamshire County Council|accessdate=23 October 2016}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.bucksherald.co.uk/lifestyle/nostalgia/vale-s-role-designing-wwii-weapons-for-winston-churchill-s-toyshop-or-how-one-man-was-arrested-at-gunpoint-for-throwing-bazooka-shells-around-1-2995355|title=Vale’s role designing WWII weapons for ‘Winston Churchill’s Toyshop’ – or how one man was arrested at gunpoint for throwing bazooka shells around|publisher=Buckinghamshire Herald|accessdate=23 October 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://ubp.buckscc.gov.uk/SingleResult.aspx?uid=%27MBC24784%27|title=The Firs, Whitchurch|publisher=Buckinghamshire County Council|accessdate=23 October 2016}} 6. ^{{London Gazette|issue=35586|page=2475|date=11 June 1942}} 7. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.whitchurch.org/village-history/the-firs-veterans-day/|title=The Firs Veterans Day 16 July 2010|publisher=Whitchurch|accessdate=23 October 2016}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.whitchurch.org/village-history/|title=Village History|publisher=Whitchurch|accessdate=23 October 2016}} 1 : Country houses in Buckinghamshire |
