The Ian Wooldridge Award is an award annually presented by the Daily Mail to the British sportsman or sportswoman who has best represented the values of "corinthian spirit and a sense of fair play as well as style, courage and originality".[1][2] First awarded in 2008, the winner is voted on by the readers of the newspaper.[1][2] The award began and was named in honour of Ian Wooldridge, a sportswriter who worked for the Daily Mail for forty-five years, who had died the previous year.[1][2] He is still widely regarded as England's finest ever sportswriter.[1][2] The only stipulation the award has is that the sportsman or sportswoman must either still be competing or has retired within the previous five years.[1][2]
