HistoryThe hotel was designed by Harry Mulliken from the architectural firm Mulliken & Moeller.[4] It opened in October 1900 and included both an apartment house and a hotel. In its early years the hotel had a stable attached on the Fifth Avenue side of the building.[2] During the Great Depression the hotel was able to maintain its reputation as a "refined, well-kept hotel". The Wigwam Bar opened at the hotel in 1939 and contained images of the pilgrims and Native Americans.[4] In 1949, the hotel was the headquarters of the National Council of the Arts, Sciences and Professionals. James Dean lived at the hotel for two years from 1951 to 1953[5] in room 83.[6] Suite 803[7] is named after him.[8] The female lead in Peter Link's Broadway musical Earl of Ruston (1971), Leecy R. Woods Moore, also temporarily lived at the property in 1971.[9] In 1996 Horn took over the ownership of the hotel, which had been in his family's possession since 1959.[2] After a $13 million renovation in 1997, Horn affiliated the Iroquois with Small Luxury Hotels of the World.[7][4] References1. ^{{Cite news|url=https://skift.com/2014/02/25/interview-new-york-citys-newest-boutique-hotel-brand-is-banking-on-neighborhood-appeal/|title=Interview: New York City's Newest Boutique Hotel Brand Is Banking on Neighborhood Appeal|date=2014-02-25|work=Skift|access-date=2018-09-16}} 2. ^1 2 3 {{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1999/03/21/realestate/commercial-property-iroquois-west-44th-street-between-fifth-sixth-avenues-budget.html?src=pm&pagewanted=1|title=Commercial Property / The Iroquois, on West 44th Street Between Fifth and Sixth Avenues; From a Budget Hostelry to a Small Luxury Hotel|last=Holusha|first=John|newspaper=The New York Times|date=March 21, 1999|access-date=2018-09-16}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.slh.com/hotels/the-iroquois-hotel/|title=The Iroquois, Luxury Hotel in New York City, USA|website=www.slh.com|access-date=2018-09-16}} 4. ^1 2 {{Cite book|url=https://books.google.co.il/books?id=aial0PkSbJgC&pg=PA167&lpg=PA167&dq=iroquois+hotel+national+council+of+the+arts+sciences&source=bl&ots=MRVfvntzVq&sig=7i0T-Z9cc3LlYrLZ_EcFbYqVxgE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwih3IGe0qPdAhVLDsAKHUlrCBQQ6AEwBHoECAYQAQ#v=snippet&q=iroquois%20hotel%20&f=false|title=Built to Last: 100+ Year-Old Hotels in New York|last=Turkel|first=Stanley|date=2011-10-18|publisher=AuthorHouse|isbn=9781463443405}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.lonelyplanet.com/usa/new-york-city/hotels/the-iroquois-new-york|title=The Iroquois New York|website=www.lonelyplanet.com|access-date=2018-09-16}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1998/02/17/nyregion/public-lives-a-chief-chosen-by-iroquois-hotel.html|title=Public Lives; A Chief Chosen By Iroquois Hotel|newspaper=The New York Times|date=February 17, 1998|last=Barron|first=James|authorlink=James Barron (journalist)|access-date=2018-09-16}} 7. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://overnightnewyork.com/portfolio-item/iroquois-new-york/|title=The Iroquois New York|last=Trucco|first=Terry|date=2017|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=16 September 2018}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.room77.com/hotel-new-york-the-iroquois-163794|title=The Iroquois New York, New York|website=www.room77.com|access-date=2018-09-16}} 9. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1971/04/27/archives/she-was-perfect-grandmother-for-the-rock-musical-part.html|title=She Was Perfect Grandmother for the Rock Musical Part|last=Klemesrud|first=Judy|authorlink=Judy Lee Klemesrud|newspaper=The New York Times|date=April 27, 1971|access-date=2018-09-16}} External links
