}}The Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection contains diverse works from all phases of each awardee of the Rubens Prize of the City of Siegen. It currently consists of more than 200 works by Hans Hartung, Giorgio Morandi, Francis Bacon, Antoni Tápies, Fritz Winter, Emil Schumacher, Cy Twombly, Rupprecht Geiger, Lucian Freud, Maria Lassnig, Sigmar Polke, and Bridget Riley.[1] The first works were purchased in the beginning of the 1990s and the collection has been growing steadily ever since.[2]

The Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection (“Sammlung Lambrecht-Schadeberg/Rubenspreisträger der Stadt Siegen” is the official title) is exhibited permanently in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Siegen), a museum focussing on contemporary art. Regularly alternating exhibitions show representative examples from the Rubens Prize awardees’ various phases of work. The individual artistic positions offer an insight into the European history of painting.[3]

The Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection is known not only among experts as “one of the most beautiful art collections in Germany” (Die Zeit).[4] It is a treasured part of the cultural life of the Siegerland, an area in the south of North-Rhine Westphalia.

Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg

The patron Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg began specifically collecting the works of Rubens Prize awardees in 1992:

“I started the collection to raise awareness for the statuses and reputations of the awarded winners.” (Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg)[5]

Before dedicating herself to the works of the Rubens Prize awardees, Lambrecht-Schadeberg had been collecting impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. Her reorientation went along with general endeavours regarding the foundation of a museum of contemporary art in Siegen. In 1997, Lambrecht-Schadeberg, as the first president, established the Peter Paul Rubens Foundation and thus became the trailblazer and patron of the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, which then opened in 2001. She provided the collection of paintings to the foundation as a permanent loan. In 2015, Lambrecht-Schadeberg announced her retirement from the foundation’s management board and ensured that the collection would legally remain with the Peter Paul Rubens Foundation.

Barbara Lambrecht Schadeberg was born in 1935 and grew up in the Siegerland – specifically in the small towns of Krombach and Kreuztal. After graduating from secondary school, she studied law and completed her studies successfully. In 1961, she became a co-partner of the Krombacher Brauerei Bernhard Schadeberg GmbH & Co. KG, a well-known German brewery. Along with Friedrich Schadeberg, his daughter Petra Schadeberg-Hermann and his son Bernhard Schadeberg, she has been leading the company ever since. Beside her efforts concerning the fine arts, Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg is also an active supporter of the Apollo Theatre in Siegen as well as the Philharmonic Orchestra of Southern North-Rhine Westphalia. She created the Barbara Schadeberg Foundation back in 1994 to promote a Christian style of upbringing and education.

In 2002, Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg was awarded honorary citizenship of the City of Siegen and won the James Simon Prize for her cultural and social commitment in 2014. In 2016, she received the Federal Cross of Merit.[6]
