It is a clump-forming epiphyte with flattened pseudobulbs, each with a single strap-shaped leaf. A large number of small yellowish green flowers are arranged in a cone shape on a thin but stiff flowering stem. This orchid is found from Thailand to Malesia, including on Christmas Island. DescriptionThelasis capitata is an epiphytic herb with thin roots and flattened pseudobulbs {{convert|10-15|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and wide. Each pseudobulb has a single thick, fleshy, dark green, strap-shaped leaf {{convert|50-150|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-18|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide. A large number of yellowish green resupinate flowers {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2.5-3|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are arranged in a conical head on the top of a thin but stiff flowering stem {{convert|70-180|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long emerging from the base of the pseudobulb. The flowers open one after the other in a spiral sequence, each flower lasting a few days. The dorsal sepal is about {{convert|3|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide, the lateral sepals about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide. The petals are shorter and narrower than the dorsal sepal. The labellum is {{convert|4-4.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|2.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide and curves downwards. Flowering occurs between April and June.[2][3]Taxonomy and namingThelasis capitata was first formally described in 1825 by Carl Ludwig Blume who published the description in Bijdragen tot de flora van Nederlandsch Indië.[4][5] The specific epithet (capitata) is a Latin word meaning "having a head".[6]Distribution and habitatThe conical fly orchid usually grows on rainforest trees. It is found in Thailand, Borneo, Java, the Maluku Islands, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra and Christmas Island.[1] References1. ^1 2 {{WCSP |203608 |Thelasis capitata}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15466876}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =475}} 3. ^{{cite web |title=Christmas Island Botanical Postage Stamps - Thelasis capitata |url=https://www.anbg.gov.au/stamps/christmas-island/stamp-xmas-thelasis-capitata-1994.html |publisher=Australian National Botanic Gardens |accessdate=18 January 2019}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Thelasis capitata|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/620993|publisher=APNI|accessdate=18 January 2019}} 5. ^{{cite book |last1=Blume |first1=Carl Ludwig |title=Bijdragen tot de flora van Nederlandsch Indië (Part 7) |date=1825 |location=Batavia |pages=386–387 |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/9224#page/104/mode/1up |accessdate=18 January 2019}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=399}} 4 : Thelasis|Plants described in 1825|Flora of Christmas Island|Orchids of Indonesia |
