}} Thelymitra aristata, commonly called the great sun orchid,[3] is a species of orchid that is endemic to south-eastern Australia. It has a single large, thick leaf and bracts and up to forty crowded blue or purplish flowers with darker veins. DescriptionThelymitra aristata is a tuberous, perennial herb with a single thick, fleshy, channelled, linear to lance-shaped leaf {{convert|250-400|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|25-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Between six and forty pale blue, deep blue or purple flowers with darker veins {{convert|30-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are crowded on a flowering stem {{convert|300-1000|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. There are between three and five large bracts along the flowering stem. The sepals and petals are {{convert|15-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|6-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The column is cream-coloured to white or pale blue, {{convert|6-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5-5.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide. The lobe on the top of the anther is purplish brown with a finely-toothed yellow tip. The side lobes have dense, mop-like tufts of white hairs. The flowers are scented, insect-pollinated and open on sunny days. Flowering occurs from September to January.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingThelymitra aristata was first formally described in 1840 by John Lindley from a specimen collected in Tasmania and the description was published in his book The genera and species of Orchidaceous plants.[5] The specific epithet (aristata) is a Latin word meaning "with ears".[6]Distribution and habitatThe great sun orchid grows in a wide range of habitats from swamp margins to open forest. It is found in New South Wales in coastal and near-coastal areas south of Fitzroy Falls, in the southern half of Victoria, in south-eastern South Australia and in Tasmania including King and Flinders Islands.[2][3][4] References1. ^1 {{WCSP | 203716 | Thelymitra aristata }} 2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =239}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Stajsic|first1=Val|title=Thelymitra aristata|url=https://vicflora.rbg.vic.gov.au/flora/taxon/0e97a5f0-0a82-4841-8b0d-02bc59e2d837|publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria|accessdate=8 May 2018}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Bernhardt|first1=Peter|title=Thelymitra aristata|url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Thelymitra~aristata|publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney|accessdate=8 May 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Thelymitra aristata|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/521534|publisher=APNI|accessdate=8 May 2018}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=621}} External links
