It has a single glossy, limp leaf and up to eleven strongly scented blue flowers with a deeply notched V-shape on the anther above the column. DescriptionThelymitra fragrans is a tuberous, perennial herb with a single limp, glossy, bright green, linear to lance-shaped leaf {{convert|80-270|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-22|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Between two and eleven pale blue, pink, mauve or rarely white flowers {{convert|25-30|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|150-350|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The sepals and petals are {{convert|10-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The column is white, {{convert|6-7|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|3-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lobe on the top of the anther is yellowish brown to deep red, tube-shaped and curved with a deep V-shaped notch. The side lobes have tufts of white hairs in an almost spherical shape. The flowers are insect-pollinated, strongly scented and open in hot weather. Flowering occurs from August to October.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingThelymitra fragrans was first formally described in 1988 by David Jones and Mark Clements from a specimen collected in the Lamington National Park and the description was published in Austrobaileya.[5][6] The specific epithet (fragrans) is a Latin word meaning "smelling agreeably",[7] referring to "the strong floral fragrance".[6]Distribution and habitatThe fragrant sun orchid grows in rocky places in open forest, often near streams and is often found growing in clumps of Dendrobium kingianum. It occurs mainly between the Blackall Range in Queensland and Werrikimbe National Park in New South Wales but also in the Carnarvon Range further north in Queensland and sometimes as far south as Sydney.[2][4][6] References1. ^{{WCSP | 203748 | Thelymitra fragrans }} 2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =241}} 3. ^{{cite journal|last1=Jeanes|first1=Jeffrey A.|title=An overview of the Thelymitra nuda (Orchidaceae) complex in Australia including the description of six new species|journal=Muelleria|date=2013|volume=31|pages=13–14|url=https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/documents/MuelleriaVol-31-p3-Jeanes-PDF-Accessibility.pdf|accessdate=11 May 2018}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Bernhardt|first1=Peter|title=Thelymitra fragrans|url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Thelymitra~fragrans|publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney|accessdate=11 May 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Thelymitra fragrans|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/549728|publisher=APNI|accessdate=11 May 2018}} 6. ^1 2 {{cite journal|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=New orchid taxa from south-eastern Queensland|journal=Austrobaileya|date=1988|volume=2|issue=5|pages=550–552}} 7. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=352}} External links
