It has a single long, erect, fleshy, channelled leaf and up to eighteen deep blue to purple self-pollinating flowers. DescriptionThelymitra peniculata is a tuberous, perennial herb with a single erect, dark green, fleshy, channelled, linear leaf {{convert|140-400|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with a purplish base. Up to eighteen deep blue to rich purple flowers {{convert|14-22|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are arranged on a flowering stem {{convert|250-650|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The sepals and petals are {{convert|6-12|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|3-6.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The column is pink or purplish, {{convert|4.5-6.5|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2.5-4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lobe on the top of the anther is dark brown to blackish with a yellow tip, tubular and sharply curved with a notched tip. The side lobes curve upwards and have untidy, mop-like tufts of white hairs. Flowering occurs from September to November but the flowers are self-pollinating and only open on hot days.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingThelymitra peniculata was first formally described in 2004 by Jeff Jeanes. The description was published in Muelleria from a specimen collected near Narrandera.[5] The specific epithet (peniculata) is derived from the Latin word peniculus meaning "brush"[6] referring to the loose, semi-erect tuft of hairs on the lateral lobes.[3]Distribution and habitatThe trim sun orchid usually grows in a range of habitats from grassland to forest south from Mount Kaputar in New South Wales to the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Tasmania and the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.[2][3][4][7] References1. ^{{WCSP | 268340 | Thelymitra peniculata }} 2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =236}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite journal|last1=Jeanes|first1=Jeffrey A.|title=A revision of the Thelymitra pauciflora R.Br.
