It has a single erect, fleshy leaf and up to six relatively small blue flowers with a few small darker spots. The flowers are self-pollinated and open only slowly on hot days. The species is restricted to a few restricted montane sites in south-eastern Tasmania. DescriptionThelymitra sparsa is a tuberous, perennial herb with a single erect, fleshy, channelled, linear to lance-shaped leaf {{convert|60-250|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|2-5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Up to six blue flowers with a few small darker spots, {{convert|25-30|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are arranged on a flowering stem {{convert|100-250|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The sepals and petals are {{convert|10-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|4-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide. The column is bluish, {{convert|4.5-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|2.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The lobe on the top of the anther is dark blue and brown with a yellow tip and a few short finger-like glands on the back. The side lobes have a few sparse white hairs on their ends. Flowering occurs in December and January but the flowers are self-pollinated and only open on hot days, and then only slowly.[2][3]Taxonomy and namingThelymitra sparsa was first formally described in 1999 by David Jones from a specimen collected on the plains near Snug and the description was published in Australian Orchid Research.[4] The specific epithet (sparsa) is a Latin word meaning “strewn", "sprinkled", "flecked" or "spotted",[5] referring to the sparse hairs on the anther's lateral lobes.[3]Distribution and habitatThe wispy sun orchid is restricted to a few montane sites on the Snug Plains and Wellington Range near Hobart where it grows in low scrub with grasses and sedges.[2][3] References1. ^{{WCSP | 203815 | Thelymitra sparsa }} 2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =242}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite journal|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=Contributions to Tasmanian Orchidology|journal=Australian Orchid Research|date=1998|volume=3|pages=197–198}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Thelymitra sparsa|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/574941|publisher=APNI|accessdate=25 May 2018}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=742}} External links
