The Museum of the Broads is an accredited museum and registered charity whose mission is to 'Bring the story of the Broads Alive’. The Norfolk Broads are a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes in the English counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. The Broads were formed when peat was dug out of marshland and used as fuel. This began over 2,000 years’ ago. The peat diggings gradually flooded in medieval times, creating the lakes, or broads, of today. In the past, it was believed that the landscape was natural however, in the 1950s, Dr Joyce Lambert proved that the lakes and landscape were indeed manmade. Dr Lambert’s findings and equipment are on display at the Museum. The Museum covers all aspects of the Broads ranging from the landscape, industry, wildlife, people, holidays and of course boats and is open just before Easter until the end of October every year. The Museum has an extensive collection of boats[1], models, marsh working tools, boat plans, paintings, books, photographs, postcards, wildlife, and social history items and memorabilia. Their Victorian steam launch ‘Falcon’, built in 1894, is perhaps the best-known exhibit and enables visitors to experience the Broads by water.[2] The Museum first opened in Potter Heigham in 1996, then moved to its current location at the Poor’s Staithe in Stalham, in 1999.[3]The Museum is supported by their Patron, Henry Cator OBE DL, managed by a board of trustees and largely staffed by volunteers. The Museum has a network of supporters who are scattered throughout the world, and attracts 8,000 plus visitors every year.
