The painting depicts a young family—the woman and child in a dray, the man and a dog on foot—making "its way down a bush track, buffeted by the treacherous ‘north wind’".[1] The painting was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in 1941 through the Felton Bequest. The NGV undertook a major restoration of the painting in 2014 funded with assistance from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Art Conservation Project.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|last1=Murray|first1=Phip|last2=Varcoe-Cocks|first2=Michael|title=Composition of the North Wind|url=http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/ebooks/northwind/#/page/8|website=Frederick McCubbin: The North wind|publisher=National Gallery of Victoria|accessdate=16 December 2015}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Iconic 19th Century Australian artwork to be restored|url=http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/media_release/iconic-19th-century-australian-artwork-to-be-restored/|publisher=National Gallery of Victoria|accessdate=16 December 2015|date=7 April 2014}} External links
