HistoryThe Republic building was designed in 1971 by Myron Goldsmith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as the first of their 1960 masterplan for the city of Columbus.[1] The one storey structure was constructed with a steel and aluminum frame on a low concrete foundation. The structure's glass exterior originally allowed the newspaper's bright yellow printing press to be viewed from the nearby street.[2] The printing press was removed from the building and all printing functions were moved off site in 1997. In 2016, the newspaper relocated.[3] In 2016 the building was purchased by Southeastern Indiana Medical Holdings for $2.8 million for use as an administrative office.[4][5] The IU Foundation Inc of Indiana University purchased the building from Southeastern Indiana Medical Holdings in 2018 for $2.8 million. The building is intended to house the university's new Master of Architecture program.[6][3] ReceptionIn 1975 the building received an award from the American Institute of Architects.[7] In popular cultureThe building was featured throughout the 2017 film Columbus.[8] Historical designationIn 2012, the site was designated a National Historic Landmark on the basis of its architecture, making it the seventh structure in Columbus to receive the title.[9] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.dezeen.com/2017/09/01/11-important-modernist-buildings-columbus-indiana/|title=11 important modernist buildings in Columbus, Indiana|date=2017-09-01|website=Dezeen|language=en|access-date=2019-03-11}} 2. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kamin/ct-met-newspaper-building-kamin-0506-story.html|title=Former newspaper building in Indiana, a modernist icon shaped in Chicago, will house architecture program|last=Kamin|first=Blair|website=chicagotribune.com|language=en-US|access-date=2019-03-11}} 3. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.architectmagazine.com/practice/designed-to-celebrate-the-press-a-1970s-som-building-will-become-an-architecture-school_o|title=Designed to Celebrate the Press, a 1970s SOM Building Will Now House an Architecture Program|last=|first=|date=|website=www.architectmagazine.com|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2019-03-11}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.therepublic.com/2018/05/01/indiana_university_purchases_former_republic_building_to_house_masters_program/|title=Indiana University purchases former Republic building to house master’s program|last=Johannesen|first=Kirk|website=The Republic|language=en-US|access-date=2019-03-11}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.therepublic.com/2016/05/27/buildings_location_architectural_significance_attracted_growing_organization_to_property/|title=Building’s location, architectural significance attracted growing organization to property|last=Johannesen|first=Kirk|website=The Republic|language=en-US|access-date=2019-03-11}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=https://apnews.com/e97d11d50264416bb6da24214e865245|title=IU architecture program moving into former newspaper office|date=2018-05-01|website=AP NEWS|access-date=2019-03-11}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1996/07/17/arts/myron-goldsmith-architect-and-engineer-is-dead-at-77.html|title=Myron Goldsmith, Architect And Engineer, Is Dead at 77|last=Dunlap|first=David W.|date=1996-07-17|work=The New York Times|access-date=2019-03-11|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.therepublic.com/2017/09/15/trace_movie_stars_footsteps_to_columbus_architecture/|title=Trace movie stars’ footsteps to featured Columbus architecture|last=McClure|first=Julie|website=The Republic|language=en-US|access-date=2019-03-11}} 9. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.hspa.com/republic-building-named-landmark/|website=www.hspa.com|access-date=2019-03-11}} 4 : Buildings and structures in Columbus, Indiana|Modernist architecture in Indiana|National Historic Landmarks in Columbus, Indiana|Commercial buildings completed in 1970 |
