It was translated from Czech in 1928 and is performed as a lullaby to the baby Jesus. HistoryThe carol was first published in an anthology in 1920 in Czechoslovakia, where it was described as a traditional Czech carol.[1] It was loosely translated into English by Percy Dearmer,[1] as part of his effort of resurrecting hymns that had fallen into disuse and introducing European hymns into the Church of England.[2]{{Self-published inline|certain=yes|date=December 2017}} The carol is sung in the form of a lullaby to Jesus while rocking the manger as if it were a more modern cradle,[3] as noted by the repetitive chorus of "We will rock you".[4][5] It was first published in The Oxford Book of Carols, which Dearmer had edited alongside Martin Shaw and Ralph Vaughan Williams, in 1928.[2] After initial publication, the carol gradually decreased in popularity until the 1960s when the English actress Julie Andrews performed a commercially released version of it.[6] Following this, it was published in Carols for Choirs by David Willcocks and John Rutter.[7] DescriptionThe Rocking Carol consists of two verses with eight lines each.[8] It is performed with a 10.7.8.8.7.7 metre.[1] The hymn continues to be published within Church of England and Anglican hymnals.[5] The hymn has been described as the quintessential lullaby carol compared with similar wording lullaby Christmas carols of "Silent Night" and "Away in a Manger" as hymnologists opine that the lyrics and melody both strongly suggest the rocking of a cradle.[3] CriticismAfter publication, the final line of the carol met with dissatisfaction, with a number of hymnal editors altering it from "Darling, darling little man" to "Son of God and Son of Man".[2] Critics of The Rocking Carol have argued that it has only minor Biblical references and is written without theological context and historical precision.[9] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://hymnary.org/text/little_jesus_sweetly_sleep_do_not_stir |title=Little Jesus, Sweetly Sleep |publisher=Hymnary.org |date= |accessdate=2017-11-15}} 2. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite book | first =John | last =Garden | title =The Christmas Carol Dance Book | publisher = Lulu.com | edition = | year = 2002 | isbn = 1445264447 | page = 51}} 3. ^1 {{cite book | first =William | last =Studwell | title =The Christmas Carol Reader | publisher = Routledge | edition = | year = 2012 | isbn = 1136591451 | page = 30}} 4. ^{{cite book | first =William | last =Crump | title =The Christmas Carol Encyclopedia | publisher = McFarland | edition =3rd | year = 2013 | isbn = 1476605734 | page = 346}} 5. ^1 {{cite book | first =David | last =Day | title =Emmaus Bible Resources Christ Our Life: Colossians | publisher = Church House Publishing | edition = | year = 2003 | isbn = 0715149873 | pages = 19–20, 98}} 6. ^{{cite book | first =Aled | last =Jones |authorlink=Aled Jones | title =Aled Jones' Favourite Christmas Carols | publisher = Random House | edition = | year = 2010 | isbn = 1409051102 | page = 133}} 7. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.yamahamusiclondon.com/Carols-For-Choirs-1/pidCOBS012686823 |title=Carols For Choirs 1 |publisher=Yamaha Music London |date= |accessdate=2017-11-15}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=https://hymnary.org/media/fetch/190587 |title=Little Jesus, Sweetly Sleep music |publisher=Hymnary.org |date= |accessdate=2017-11-21}} 9. ^{{cite book | first =Shelia | last =Whiteley | title =Christmas, Ideology and Culture | publisher = Edinburgh University Press | edition = | year = 2008 | isbn = 0748631879 | page = 95}} 2 : Christmas carols|1920 songs |
