There’s a Tom Waits vibe in the fuzzy-megaphone reverb mic, and something ancient, near tribal, in his whistles and moans.” [1] Early lifeLorenz was born April 1, 1982, and raised in Cavendish, Vermont, the son of schoolteachers. He learned to sing from his sister Kate. As a child and teenager he would take apart old radios, phones, televisions, organs, watches, insects, books, bikes, boilers, and rebuild new things from the parts. His scavengening extended beyond his own home, and he was a dump rat, building things, including primitive string and wind instruments and drums from what he found. He made strange recordings. Transmogrifying objects and ideas into music became an early constant, and he did not like to see anything go to waste. Lorenz graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 2004, and lives now on a homestead in rural Western Massachusetts. He tours heavily except during sugaring and cider seasons, when he remains at home to work in the woods. Career & RecognitionDuring college, Lorenz and his sister Kate Lorenz formed the trio Rusty Belle with their friend Zak Trojano. Meanwhile, with a familiar thrift and ethos someone labelled “swamp yankee” he learned to perform on several instruments at the same time—guitar or fiddle, drums, junk percussion, keyboards—so he could tour solo when Rusty Belle was off the road. He had also discovered throat singing, during a course in South Indian cooking at Hampshire College, and taught himself how to do it. He called his solo project The Suitcase Junket. His rig and his sound depend upon found objects which include suitcases, bottles, silverware, bones, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, a two-octave keyboard, vintage tube amps, and an acoustic guitar he pulled from a dumpster on Hampshire College’s annual “hippie Christmas” —the day after graduation when students move off campus and valuable things are discarded or abandoned. In 2016, a writer in Rochester, NY, heard The Suitcase Junket's show at Abilene Bar & Lounge and described the rig and the music: ”Now this is the shit I'm talking about, Jack. The Suitcase Junket is a lo-fi, low-tuned, low-down blast of end-times folk blues. It's crude; it's magnificent. With a stage set-up that resembles a junkyard foley stage or Fred Sanford's living room, The Suitcase Junket — one man band leader Matt Lorenz — incants and intones like a cross between Hound Dog Taylor and a Tuvan throat singer who has swallowed a bird. Take the singer-songwriter idiom, give it a low grade fever and a guitar and this is what you get. Captivating, mesmerizing, and gone ... real gone."[2] National Public Radio (NPR) chose sessions from the 2015 album Make Time as one of their fifteen favorite sessions of that year,[3] and The Suitcase Junket was named to Spotify's Best of 2016 Folk & Americana and Blues & Roots Rock playlists.[4] Lorenz headlines nationally and in Canada. In 2018, he began touring more heavily in the U.K. and Europe. A sampling of festival plays indicate the appeal of The Suitcase Junket's music across genres: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, CA; Ottawa Blues Festival, ON; Burlington Jazz Festival, VT; California WorldFest; Mountain Jam, NY; MASS MoCA's FreshGrass Bluegrass Festival, MA; FloydFest, VA; Nelsonville, OH; Red Wing Roots Festival, VA; Green River Festival, MA; Clearwater Festival, NY; Winnipeg Folk Festival, MB; Americana Music Festival, TN; Mile of Music, WI; Hillside Festival, Guelph; Otis Mountain Get Down, NY. The Suitcase Junket has supported Lake Street Dive, Los Lobos, The Record Company, The Suffers, Tift Merritt, Chris Smither, and Charlie Musselwhite, Jackie Green, among others. A visual artist who works in many mediums, Lorenz design his own album art until 2019. His next album, to be released April 5, 2019, from Signature Sounds Recordings,[5] will be produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. Berlin's producer credits include Jackie Greene, Leo Kottke, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Deer Tick.
