The Try Guys (2018-present)

}}The Try Guys is an American online comedy series currently available for streaming on YouTube.[1] The series stars comedians, actors, and filmmakers Keith Habersberger, Ned Fulmer, Zach Kornfeld, and Eugene Lee Yang. The group created the Try Guys while working for BuzzFeed and subsequently separated themselves from the internet media company in 2018. The four of them write, produce, direct, shoot, and act in each episode.[2][3]

Background

The group was formed at Buzzfeed in 2014 by four then-employees: Ned Fulmer, Eugene Lee Yang, Keith Habersberger, and Zach Kornfeld. The original video that starred all four men was based around pure timing and, according to Kornfeld, "It really came down to who was willing to show their butts."[4] At the start of the series, they attempted to involve other people in the project, to no avail. However, with the extremely positive feedback from viewers, the group decided to stick together and create videos.

In 2018, the group launched an independent production company named 2nd Try LLC, under which the group gained all rights to The Try Guys brand, such as its social media presence. The group promised, with the new company, "a brand-spankin' new slate of digital shows, live tours, feature films, and hopefully someday, customizable toasters."[5]

They started in 2014 when they posted "Guys Try Ladies' Underwear for the First Time" under Buzzfeed Motion Pictures. Since then, their viral videos have garnered over a billion views across social media platforms. Their show Squad Wars[6] premiered on YouTube Red in early 2017. Their most notable video, "The Try Guys Try Labor Pain Simulation," has garnered over 30 million views.[7]

The Try Guys have been the subject of considerable publicity with appearances on Today and several magazines for various videos and interviews.[8][9][10][11][12][13] The Try Guys were a 2017 Streamy Awards audience choice nominee for Show of the Year.[14] In 2018, they hosted the 8th annual Streamy Awards (2018) and won the audience choice: Show Of The Year award, in which they had been nominated in 2017.[15][16]

Filming typically takes place in Los Angeles County, California, in cities such as Glendale and Burbank, but, depending on the nature of the video, may take place elsewhere.[17]

On June 16, 2018, The Try Guys announced that they had left BuzzFeed and started their own independent production company, 2nd Try LLC.[18][19] 2nd Try LLC gained all rights to The Try Guys brand.[20]

On January 30, 2019, the Try Guys announced in their video, We Have A Secret, that they'd co-written a book, The Hidden Power of F*cking Up.[21] It is scheduled for release by HarperCollins on June 18, 2019 and will available for purchase through popular retail stores such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.[22] As a humorous incentive to encourage fans to pre-order the book, Kornfeld announced that he would film a follow up to "Eugene Gets Surprised With His Worst Nightmare" if 10,000 copies were purchased before the release date.[23]

Keith

Keith Douglas Habersberger (b. 18 June 1987 in Carthage, Tennessee) was born in Tennessee and raised in Illinois, one of three children born to Donald and Patricia Habersberger.[24][25] He is a graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in acting.[26] Habersberger is married to Becky Habersberger (née Miller), a makeup artist.[27] Habersberger is reportedly {{convert|6|ft|3|in|abbr=|m}}, making him the tallest of the Try Guys.[28] He uses the handle @KeithHabs on social media. His name is pronounced {{IPA|/kiθ hæbɝsbɝgɚ/}} KEETH habb-ERS-bur-gur.[29]

Ned

Edward Gallo Fulmer (b. 11 June 1987 in Jacksonville, Florida), better known as Ned, is a graduate of Yale University, having majored in chemistry. He is married to Ariel Fulmer, an interior designer, and the two have one child together, a son named Wesley James "Wes" Fulmer (b. 2018).[30][31] Fulmer previously held a fear of dogs, stemming from a Dobermann attack as a young child, but was able to overcome his phobia with the adoption of his dog, a chocolate labradoodle named Bean.[32] He has said that he's of Italian ancestry.[33] He uses the handle @nedfulmer on social media.

Zach

Zachary Andrew "Zach" Kornfeld (b. 26 July 1990 in Scarsdale, New York) was born in New York to Jewish parents, Adam and Margo Kornfeld.[34] He became involved in filmmaking and editing after receiving LEGO Movie Maker as a child.[35] He is Jewish but does not keep kosher and did not have a bar mitzvah, though he did choose the Hebrew name Rakdan (Hebrew: רַקְדָן), meaning dancer.[36][37] He has one tattoo, a smiley face on his buttock. Kornfeld was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in his late 20s.[38][39] He graduated from Emerson College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.[40] As a child, he appeared on Saturday Night Live in an episode hosted by Elijah Wood that aired on 13 December 2003.[41][42] As of December 2018, he has been in a relationship with Margaret "Maggie" Bustamante for over two years.[43] He uses the handle @korndiddy on social media.

Eugene

Eugene Lee Yang (Hangul: 양유진; b. 18 January 1986 in Pflugerville, Texas) was born in Texas with two sisters to immigrants from Korea. Yang graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Cinema Production and a 4.0 GPA.[44] An interview with Out identified Yang as gay but Yang has described himself as unisexual, queer, or simply LGBT; he regularly participates in LGBT pride events and has worked with The Trevor Project.[45][46] He uses the handle @eugeneleeyang.
