释义 |
The Young Caucasians were a pop band from the Washington DC area, who had a measure of success in the 1980s after an appearance on the comedy television show Saturday Night Live. The band released a seven-song album, Pop Quiz (Wasp Records, 1983),[1] and six-song EP, The White Stuff (1986).[2] While the Washington Post described their music as "good-humored", it noted that they were not a "joke band".[3] Their most notable performance was in a 1977 skit on Saturday Night Live with Ray Charles during which they played the Charles classic "What'd I Say", a song whose erotic content had been causing some controversy because of "the dialogue between himself [Charles] and his backing singers that started in church and ended up in the bedroom".[4] The skit was a spoof of the double racial standard of the time; Charles hosted an episode and had the original band he toured with in the 1950s to join him. In the skit, he tells a producer that he wants to record the song, but the producer tells him that a white band named the "Young Caucasians", composed of beaming white teenagers, are to record it first, which they do on the show, in a chaste, sanitized, and unexciting performance. When Charles and his band counter with their original version, Garrett Morris tells them, "Sorry. That'll never make it".[5] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/style/1983/06/26/recent-releases-from-dc-rockers/6301b7f8-75bb-4440-a132-46cf610b24ac/|title=Recent Releases From D.C.
