E. W. Schmidt described a new species, Thrixopelma ockerti, placing it in the new genus Thrixopelma. The description was based on a female spider that had been obtained from Peru and reared by Roland Ockert. The genus was differentiated from other tarantulas found in Peru by features such as the toothed tarsal claws, the distribution of hairs and the shape of the seminal receptacles. Three further species were added to the genus between 1998 and 2010.[1] The genus name is derived from the Greek {{lang|grc|θριξ}} (thrix), meaning hair or bristle, and {{lang|grc|πέλμα}} (pelma), meaning sole of the foot. Species{{As of|2016|04}}, the World Spider Catalog accepted the following species:[1]
