Toby Hession (born 6 February 1997) is a British composer, conductor, and pianist.

Early life and studies

Hession was born in Peterborough. Between 2010 and 2015 he attended Chetham's School of Music, Manchester,[1] studying piano with Masayuki Tayama, with whom he continues to study, and composition with Gavin Wayte. He currently reads music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he holds a Choral Scholarship and an Instrumental award.

Composer

Hession has written works for a wide variety of genres that have been broadcast and performed in venues such as Westminster Abbey, King’s College, Cambridge, Peterborough Cathedral, the Royal College of Music and the Wellcome Collection, London by ensembles including the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, Aurora Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, the Commonwealth Festival Orchestra, Chetham’s New Music Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain and Inner Voices. Most recent works include a commission by The King's Singers[2] and Clare Canticles,[3] which were premièred by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge in March 2018. His works have been broadcast on Classic FM and Radio 3[4] and are published by Edition Peters.

Conductor

Hession has conducted a wide range of ensembles such as the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, the Commonwealth Festival Orchestra, Chetham’s New Music Ensemble, Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra, the Clare College Music Society (CCMS) orchestra in venues such as West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, Westminster Abbey, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester Cathedral and Chetham’s School of Music. January 2018 saw him conduct the UK premiere of Iván Fischer's Eine Deutsch-Jiddische Kantate in Clare College Chapel, in an original staging by director Josh Cleary. In February 2018, he conducted Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique) and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with soloist Masayuki Tayama and the Trinity College Musical Society (TCMS) orchestra at the Chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge.[5]

Pianist

Hession has given performances across the UK, at venues including West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, St. Martin in the Fields, St. James’s Piccadilly, London, the Royal Northern College of Music and Peterborough Cathedral. He has performed Grieg's Piano Concerto[6] and Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto ('Emperor') with the Cambridge University Music Society (CUMS) orchestra and the East Anglia Chamber Orchestra respectively.
